Drones have created a lot of controversy lately: people are complaining about no-fly zones, others have been worried about their privacy. Most people are just excited to fly a miniature helicopter, while some are worried about the government and corporations spying on our everyday lives. Whichever way you happen to lean, one thing is for sure: quadcopter drones are making a huge impact.
Of course, drones have been used for entertainment for some time now - the consumer models you see every day are built for exactly this. Then again, it's not as if carrying a camera is the only thing these quadcopters can do...why not set up some sort of show, so that people can see everything these little drones can do?
That's exactly what Dutch event organizer Fjuze is planning to do - the company is producing the first-ever drone-only entertainment show, and it's released the first trailer for Air 2015.
Let's be honest, that was a better Terminator trailer than anything Hollywood's come up with lately.
All joking aside, it's a strange concept. Instead of watching a singer, or a dancer, or an athlete, people will fill the Amsterdam arena to watch drones do their thing. These aren't going to be run-of-the-mill drones, either; these are top-of-the-line quadcopters, as the Royal Dutch Airforce is working with Fjuze on the event. Even so - it's bizarre to think that drones have become this popular in such a short amount of time.
That being said, it's really not that big of a stretch. It wasn't so long ago that people were watching the Blue Angels do their thing, and when it comes down to it, Air could just be the miniaturized version of an airshow. Sure, the trailer promises stuff like lasers, illusions and the circus, but it's likely that most of Air will be dedicated to aerial acrobatics - which, when you think about it, isn't that big of a diversion from more traditional airshows (it'll just have more lasers).
As it stands, the show is still in the planning stages, meaning there's still a ways to go before anything gets off the ground. Air is scheduled to debut at the Amsterdam Arena sometime later this year.
