Pinterest becomes even sweeter as an eye-candy social bookmarking site. It updated its mobile website, Thursday, to become even more visually appealing and functional.
As the company announced in its official blog, things got more "pinteresting" with its mobile website getting a cleaner look injected with features also seen on its desktop version. Smartphone and tablet pinners can now make most of "more useful pins" and "related pins."
"As we launch in new countries around world, we want to make it easy for everyone to access Pinterest-no matter where you are or what device you're using. That's why we recently updated our mobile website," wrote Pinterest software engineer Tracy Chou.
"The iOS and Android apps are still the fastest way to access Pinterest, but if you don't have the apps, the mobile site is a great alternative. Stay tuned for more mobile updates over the next few months!" she added.
The "more useful pins" feature was first introduced May last year. These pins come with additional information. Meanwhile, "related pins" are pins that Pinterest picks for the user based on likes and interests of the account holder.
Pinterest received additional funding of $225 million in October and announced its goal of being more attractive and easily accessible to its international users.
On Jan. 28, the company announced that Pinterest is available in Indonesian. Earlier that month the website got its Korean version to allow users from that corner of the globe to explore its network. In December, it conquered the Web in Russia, Slovak, Poland, Turkey, and Czech Republic and set the milestone of having versions in over 20 languages.
Pinterest disclosed that 75 percent of its traffic originate from its mobile apps for the Android and iOS platform. However, it wants to make sure that people who do not have access to its mobile applications can still enjoy its mobile website.
The company has not disclosed how large is its user base but according to analysts, there might be over 70 million Pinterest users with around 20 million considered as active users. Other studies claim that there are only 48.2 million users.
Pinterest might have a good reason to be ambitious. ShareThis reported that its research shows Pinterest as the "fastest growing sharing channel" in 2013.
"The fact that Pinterest, which is still relatively young compared to the other social channels, has surpassed email, which has been a sharing tool for decades, is just one example of how quickly consumer preferences and habits are constantly changing," said ShareThis.
Pinterest is out to conquer the world and the mobile platform and it clearly has the potential of taking on Facebook and Twitter.
