Valentine's Day is an extremely polarizing time of the year. It's great if you've got a special someone in your life that you can have a romantic roses-and-chocolates-filled evening with. However, if you don't, seeing all the happy couples enjoying their Valentine's Day festivities can be quite a bummer.
Though Valentine's Day is dedicated to all things love, some people have gotten so fed up with this mushy holiday that there is actually a strong contingent of Valentine's Day haters out there. If you're one of those people, you've come to the right place, because instead of just sitting and stewing about how dumb this holiday is, you can let out your frustrations by watching movies on Netflix that totally back up your claim that Valentine's Day sucks. Here are 11 movies that all of the Valentine's Day haters out there will love.
1. Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
If the threat of giving birth to a child that's a part of a sinister occult scheme isn't enough of a buzzkill, I don't know what is.
2. Love Story (1970)
The wrong-side-of-the-tracks romance between Jenny (Ali MacGraw) and Oliver (Ryan O'Neal) is just a struggle throughout Love Story. Though some consider Love Story to be one of the most romantic movies of all time, it will actually just leave you feeling so hopeless about love.
3. Heartburn (1986)
The real-life crumbling of Nora Ephron's marriage to journalist Carl Bernstein inspired this film about the end of a marriage between two journalists played by Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. Although there is humor in this film, Heartburn is anything but a good time.
4. Heathers (1989)
Romance is at the heart of Heathers, but it's pretty sick. Veronica is part of a high school clique full of Heathers, but her world is rocked when enigmatic loner J.D. comes to town and wants to take down the popular crowd. This is not a love story that will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy.
5. Emma (1996)
Emma is a tough heroine to root for. In this film adaptation of the Jane Austen novel by the same name, the title character can be so irksome, you almost hope that she doesn't get together with Mr. Knightley (Brian Capron) at the end. The fact that Gwyneth Paltrow plays Emma doesn't help the cause at all.
6. Romeo + Juliet (1996)
If you are a human being, you know why Romeo + Juliet really isn't a romantic movie. William Shakespeare's play made the term "star-crossed" lovers famous, after all. Baz Luhrmann's take on the Shakespearean tragedy will just leave you feeling weird.
7. On the Line (2001)
This is a rom-com with Lance Bass in the lead role. Need I say more?
8. Gigli (2003)
This movie is notoriously bad, so it really needs no introduction. Plus, it just reminds us of those "Bennifer" days, which no one wants to relive.
9. Rachel Getting Married (2008)
Wedding movies usually bring a tear to the eye, but Rachel Getting Married will have you crying for a very different reason. Anne Hathaway plays Kym, a recovering addict who returns home for her sister Rachel's wedding. All of the family drama in this movie is just depressing to say the least.
10. Melancholia (2011)
The fact that Melancholia is a Lars von Trier film should give you a hint as to why it probably doesn't make the best Valentine's Day flick. This movie begins with another very unhappy wedding and includes a strained relationship between two sisters, severe depression and the end of the world. Good times!
11. One Day (2011)
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by David Nicholls, One Day chronicles the lives of former college sweethearts-turned-friends on one day every year after they meet. You root for Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess) to get together throughout the whole movie, but this is one roller coaster ride you won't have fun on.
