Flipboard has just released a Web version of its digital magazine app, bringing its mobile news service to more users outside of those using smartphones and tablets.
The release of Flipboard's Web version comes after five years from the app launching on the Apple iPad tablet.
"We smile when we think of 2015 as the year of our Web launch, but it's here: a beautiful version of Flipboard for the desktop and a major new frontier on our quest to build the world's best personal magazine," wrote the Flipboard team on a post in its official blog.
Because the Flipboard team developed the mobile version of the service first, they saw that content could once again shine if presented in an uncluttered and clean environment. The Web also evolved along the way, with developments such as responsive design that allowed users to read and navigate websites easier with much prettier layouts.
With these components, the vision of the founders of Flipboard of bringing print-like aesthetics to content accessed digitally can finally be done.
Flipboard.com, the digital magazine's Web address, looks to keep the "heart and soul" which made the mobile app so popular. However, the Web version has its own distinct feel and look as it is specifically designed for Internet browsers.
The Web version of Flipboard features a "responsive" design that allows the website to adjust to the screen size of the viewer. There is also a new scrolling interface that is designed for use with the keyboard and mouse.
Flipboard.com will be sending recommendations to users on magazines and topics that the user may like, based on previous browsing history and the interests indicated by the user.
The Web version of Flipboard is also connected to the smartphone and tablet version of the app, which means that all customizations that the user will do on Flipboard.com will also reflect on their mobile devices, and vice versa.
All the available content on the mobile version of Flipboard is accessible through the Web version, which includes about 34,000 topics and millions upon millions of magazines. The massive amount of content can be filtered by users following only the topics that catch their interest, such as a specific travel spot or a certain news trend.
According to the Flipboard team, the launch of the service's Web version will allow millions of new users to experience Flipboard for the first time, and will also give current users more options through which they can catch up on the topics and news that they follow through the app.
