Sports fans are crazy. Some of them attach themselves to their game or team of choice with a fervor that would put most organized religions to shame.
Take for example, this Virginia basketball fan. At a game last week, she was dancing along to the background music, having a good time, cheering on her beloved Cavaliers. Suddenly she saw herself on the big screen that hangs over the court, the camera zoomed in to focus on her alone and the words "Dance Cam" appeared on the screen. Sports fans knew what that meant: it was time for a dance-off.
Our heroine launched into a furious flurry of moves, jumbling several different dance styles together and making the rest of it up as she went. And she was in it to win it, baby. You could tell by the way she looked straight into the camera like a wolf stalking her prey. She was an animal, wild and uncaged, not a trace of inhibition or nervousness.
The camera cut to her competitor, which turned out to be a goofy guy doing the robot. This man, also a Virginia fan, was obviously mugging for the camera, being as silly as possible and not putting nearly as much effort into his moves as his opponent.
The scene cut back to our female Virginia fan, and she went hardcore. Snarling now, she worked it as hard as she could. Swirling her shoulders, arms and hips, she was calling her opponent out. Show me what you've got, big guy, you can almost hear those dance moves saying.
His answer was to basically point at the camera in time with the music. Unbelievably, the words "Winner!" flashed up over his dance, awarding him the victory.
The verdict is a mimicry of justice. We demand a recount.
