The Samsung Galaxy S5 launch will most likely take place on Feb. 24 at MWC 2014. Today, Samsung sent out invitations to the press for an Unpacked event and told everyone to "Mark your calendars!"
Typically, Samsung Unpacked event invitations are simple and cryptic. This one is no exception. The only clue on the invite is a small "5," which is placed next to the word "Unpacked" and also stamped in the bottom corner next to Samsung's iconic unpacked box logo. In previous years, the number on the invite has corresponded to the model number of the device, which in this case is clearly the Galaxy S5.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 launch will occur at 8 p.m. CET on Feb. 24 in Barcelona, Spain. It's sure to be a packed event, with nearly all of MWC 2014's press attendees vying to get into the event. For those who aren't lucky enough to get inside the hallowed halls where the Galaxy S5 will be launched, it looks like Samsung will be live-streaming the event on its YouTube channel.
The Galaxy S5 release is one of the most highly-anticipated smartphone launches of the year. Apart from Apple, Samsung is one of the few companies that manages to generate a lot of intrigue prior to its device launches. In fact, almost immediately after the Galaxy S4 was released, rumors began to circulate about its successor, the S5.
For months, rumors pointed to the fact that Samsung would incorporate an iris scanner into the Galaxy S5's design. Now, more verifiable reports indicate that Samsung will put a fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S5 instead. Many reports hint that Samsung will give the Galaxy S5 a metal chassis in lieu of the standard plastic backing found on all of the earlier Galaxy S smartphone models. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which was launched is September of last year, featured a more premium looking faux leather backing.
It is widely agreed that the Galaxy S5 will sport a 2K display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. Samsung is expected to place a 64-bit Exynos octa-core processor on its new flagship, too. The Galaxy S5 will have 3 GB of RAM, a 4,000 mAh battery and a 16-megapixel camera on the back. Samsung's new flagship will obviously feature Google's Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, but now that Google has warned Samsung against over-customization, we may see a more pure version of Android on the Galaxy S5.
