It's the biggest night in music—the Grammy Awards. From outlandish outfits to surprising victories, there will be lots of excitement throughout the star-studded night.
Even if you haven't been keeping tabs on the latest and greatest on the music scene this year, there is still time to get up to speed before the heavyweights hit the stage tonight. Here are the top five things to know (including other Grammy trivia facts) about tonight's 57th annual Grammy Awards.
1. Who is hosting?
Award season is in full swing. And as we anxiously wait for Neil Patrick Harris to host the biggest night in movies, the Grammys are a perfect break from all the film buzz so you can focus on all those songs that played over and over again on the radio from the past year. Hosting the Grammys for the fourth consecutive year will be rapper LL Cool J.
2. Who is performing?
Even though we are curious to see who will take home all those beautiful golden trophies, what we really want to see are the performances. This year Madonna; Usher; Miranda Lambert; Ariana Grande; AC/DC; Common, John Legend & Beyoncé; Hozier & Annie Lennox; Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett; Sia; Sam Smith & Mary J. Blige; Rihanna, Kayne West & Paul McCartney and Katy Perry will all be performing. Of course Kayne will perform twice, once for his "FourFiveSeconds" collaboration and again for a solo performance.
3. Most nominations go to...
Sam Smith is predicted to take home a few Grammys, being nominated in six categories including: "Album of the Year," "Song of the Year," "Best Pop Vocal Album," "Record of the Year," "Best Pop Solo Performance," and "Best New Artist." Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams also have six nods this year. But even if one of the three wins all six, they won't beat Michael Jackson for winning the most Grammys in a single night. The King of Pop took home eight awards back in 1984.
The most Grammys ever won in a lifetime goes to someone who you probably won't know—Sir Georg Solti, a Hungarian-British conductor who won 31 Grammy Awards out of 74 nominations. However, Quincy Jones holds the record for the most Grammy nominations of all time with 79.
4. It will be a big night for Beyoncé & other female artists
Beyoncé became the most-nominated woman in Grammy history this year, with a total of 51 nominations, thanks to her nominations for the single "Drunk in Love" and her self-titled album. While Bey is obviously the Queen, she only ranks number three, with 17 awards won, on the list of most Grammys won by a female artist. That crown goes to bluegrass-country singer Alison Krauss with 27 awards, followed by Aretha Franklin, who has taken home 18.
Rapper Nicki Minaj could also have a big night if she takes home "Best Rap Song." It would make her the first female rapper to win the award for this category for her song "Anaconda."
If rock band Paramore takes home the award for "Best Rock Song," lead singer Hayley Williams will be the first female recipient of the award since Alanis Morissette took the Grammy home in 1999.
5. "Album of the Year" is the biggest award
Pharrell Williams is actually nominated against himself in this category for his own album GIRL, along with producing Beyoncé, and for Ed Sheeran's X. While many think this category will either go to Beyoncé or Sam Smith, it's interesting to know that the youngest artist to win "Album of the Year" was actually Taylor Swift (who won't be performing this year, tear) in 2010 for her album Fearless. She was 20 years old.
Don't know the difference from "Album of the Year" and "Song of the Year?" Don't worry, we've got you covered here.
