The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently confirmed that it is now doing business with Elon Musk's SpaceX. The agency likewise confirmed that it is testing to use of Starlink satellite internet terminals for its operations in the country.
It can be recalled that SpaceX was recently brought in to learn about its operations and help overhaul its air traffic control system.
Musk is yet again the center of controversy in this latest venture with the FAA as it creates another conflict of interest, with him serving as the unacknowledged head of DOGE.
FAA Tests Starlink Terminals Despite Existing Verizon Deal
A new statement shared by the FAA on X announced that it is now testing three Starlink terminals across its facilities in the country. The agency claimed that Starlink's technology was considered to improve its overall airspace management and operations, especially in remote locations.
One terminal is now under testing in the FAA's facility in New Jersey's Atlantic City, while two terminals are being operated at non-safety critical sites in Alaska.
The FAA said that it has been facing issues with reliable weather information for the aviation industry, and its 2024 FAA Reauthorization looked to address the problem. The FAA claimed that it had been "considering the use of Starlink" to increase reliability even before Donald Trump came back to power.
Conflict With Verizon Deal?
Bloomberg shared in its report that the FAA still has an existing $2 billion deal with Verizon to maintain and support infrastructure. However, the FAA has not provided any clarification if its business with SpaceX will affect the deal it has with Verizon.
The announcement comes after a recent SpaceX intervention at the FAA to help them fix their air traffic control system following the Washington air disaster.
Elon Musk, the FAA, and President Donald Trump
Musk has been regarded as the "Golden Boy" of Trump, as both powerful figures are known for their close alliance that ultimately led to the billionaire gaining massive power in the country.
The relationship between Musk and Trump has spiraled into many rumors and speculations, particularly as the X owner previously settled the lawsuit filed by Trump years ago for just $10 million.
Their relationship has also been targeted over the past months, and criticisms over Musk's involvement in government affairs have been growing. Most recently, hackers have looped an AI-generated video in the HUD building which portrays the Trump kissing the Musk's feet.
