After debuting GPT-4 almost two years ago and the o1 reasoning model last December, OpenAI is on track to deliver on their latest GPT-5 large language model which features the o3 reasoning model. The best thing about this release is that it would be available to access for free by all ChatGPT users, and it only requires them to have an account registered.

Unlike what it did with the o1 model, which was shipped as a standalone that required a subscription to the $200 per month ChatGPT Pro, the o3 would be available via GPT-5 exclusively.

OpenAI Makes GPT-5 Available For Free to All ChatGPT Users

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed (via X) the company's latest plans for the upcoming debut of their new large language model, GPT-5. Users may be able to access the new GPT-5 via the ChatGPT platform, and it would require them to have an account for the chatbot to access the new model.

With this, OpenAI also revealed that it will also ship the GPT-4.5, internally referred to as the "Orion," as the last of its kind "chain-of-thought" model that will go ahead of the new LLM's arrival.

Moreover, Altman revealed that free tier users of ChatGPT will get unlimited chat access to the new GPT-5 model once it arrives, available on a standard intelligence setting, and will be subject to review based on abuse thresholds.

The o3 Reasoning Model Is Coming But Via GPT-5

Alongside this, Altman also revealed a third key technology via the announcement that is coming soon, and this is the new o3 reasoning model. It will be joining and powering GPT-5 for everything that users require.

OpenAI's CEO claimed that the o3 will no longer be shipped standalone, unlike the o1, and the company also skipped the "o2" namesake.

OpenAI's Evolution From GPTs to Reasoning

It has only been two months since OpenAI went on a massive December holiday showcase, which featured the "12 Days of OpenAI" event, introducing the many upcoming and already-made available features of its AI. One of their biggest announcements here was the o1, its first reasoning model, that may take longer to respond but offers a more powerful experience for users.

Before OpenAI came around to offering the o1, it had the GPT models which the company still intends to use now, and this specific model is known for powering ChatGPT over the past years until now. The GPTs are known as large language models (LLMs) which can create massive write-ups that can either answer questions, create written content, and lately, understand multimodal inputs from prompts.

When OpenAI announced the new reasoning model last December, people saw a clear distinction between the two as there would be different features available for all, and users would be able to see the differences.

However, OpenAI is combining it into one when GPT-5 arrives, combined in the sense that users would be able to leverage the power of LLMs and a reasoning model, powered by the o3.
