Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing how designers employ User Interfaces (UIs) in business applications. As the shift toward AI as a tool for increasing business productivity continues, one expert in particular aims to tackle the obstacles to its adoption.

Avinab (Avi) Singh is a Product Designer and leader in designing AI software experiences. As AI and Machine Learning (ML) continue to change how users interact with the latest technology, Avinab shares valuable insights into designing intuitive user experiences for complex AI systems, such as those seen in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. His work addresses the unique challenges and opportunities in creating seamless, user-centered AI applications.

The Problems in Designing for AI

Designing for AI/ML products requires additional insights into the user's mental model and user-understandable patterns for this kind of software. The primary function of UI is to ensure that all users have an intuitive and seamless experience. However, as AI/ML continues to evolve, traditional UI design methods often struggle to keep up with the complexities of AI-driven systems. Unlike conventional UIs, which rely heavily on manual input and predefined workflows, AI-dependent user interfaces are probabilistic. That means output may differ each time a similar request is submitted. Designers need to accommodate the unpredictability of AI's behavior to make sure users can trust and interact with these intelligent systems.

Advancements in AI offer tools to create experiences that are not tied to traditional workflow or template-driven workflows. Some examples of this that Avinab has worked on in the past are allowing managers to create job descriptions and being provided with matching talent for their positions. This same AI technology also makes hiring candidates easier by detecting duplicate applications and reducing manual workloads. AI tools also improve responses for finding the latest documents and reports when workers search, as the AI always looks for the best and latest information sources while responding.

Career and Contributions

Avinab is currently a Staff Product Designer at Moveworks and has considerable experience in his field. He grew up in India and began his design career at Cognizant Technology Solutions in 2007. Cognizant is a well-recognized software services company headquartered in Teaneck, New Jersey. Avinab worked on designing user interfaces for some of the enterprise's international clients, including Ace Hardware, Avis/Budget, Intuit, Kohl's, and Walmart.

Following his time at Cognizant, he held positions at IBM, CA Technologies, OSISoft Inc., and Western Digital. There, he worked on unconventional technologies, which led to the discovery of new business methods through user research.

At Moveworks, Avinab spearheads the design of AI products for large and small enterprises, creating software designs for products used by companies like Snowflake, HP, Nutanix, Github, Marriott, Broadcom, Hearst, AstraZeneca, Leidos, Micron, Northrop Grumman, Spotify, and Toyota.

In one of his previous leadership roles, Avinab contributed to UI design efforts at EY GigNow and Dusty Robotics. GigNow is available in 35 countries, such as Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Dusty Robotics, which develops robot-powered tools for the construction industry, serves elite construction giants on the ENR100 list.

Avinab has also mentored many junior designers within his field. He directed the charge to start intern programs at EY GigNow and Dusty Robotics, creating intern onboarding plans and supervising every process throughout each internship. He has accumulated more than 800 minutes of mentoring on ADPList.org.

Avinab has received over 24 Bravo Recognition awards while working at EY GigNow. Avinab also received a Silver Design Award for Brief Me AI summarizing and question and answer. Additionally, his work as a reviewer of scientific papers for notable conferences like ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) further cemented his contributions and team management skills. He also judges various hackathons in the design and AI domain.

Real-World Impact: How Avinab Singh Solves Problems

At EY GigNow, Avinab worked as an Associate Director of Design. His interface for AI Auto Match empowered large enterprises with talent-matching automation efforts and, in addition to external consultant management and leading work on marketing assets, his design reduced the need to search for suitable candidates in an enterprise's hiring stage. His contributions dramatically improved the hiring process by making it as easy as "clicking a button." He also designed the AI Chatbot, allowing recruiters to easily gather candidate information without time-consuming phone calls and emailing back and forth.

At Dusty Robotics, Avinab's experience designing interfaces was particularly important. His designs enabled users with minimal training to operate complicated robotic systems successfully. His responsibilities at this series B startup included creating the UI for the iPad Controller that Dusty customers primarily use. This initiative reduced training efforts from five days to just half a day, saving Dusty Robotics and its customers millions of dollars each year. Through his experience, visits to the construction sites, and observation of the users using the robots, Avinab developed a deeper understanding of the robot's capabilities. This allowed him to create a user interface design that simplified user workflow and enhanced productivity.

Avinab continues his leadership streak at Moveworks, where he leverages AI-powered UI design. One of his most recent products, Brief Me, launched as a tool for answering questions based on given files. Office workers spend hours reading documents, datasheets, and memos, reducing their work capacity. Brief Me solves this predicament by allowing workers to streamline document navigation, increasing productivity. Now boasting around three million users, the Brief Me project showcases how Avinab is always working to provide innovative solutions.

Avinab Singh's Plans for the Future of Design for AI

Through his popular mentoring sessions, Avinab guides other product designers who struggle to overcome common work-related challenges. He ultimately helps them grow their careers with his experience and insights.

The future of AI in UI design is set for significant transformation as machine learning continues to refine how users interact with technology. Avinab plans to play a pivotal role in shaping these changes, with a particular emphasis on mentoring the next generation of designers who will work at the intersection of AI and user experience design. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into enterprise systems, Avinab's approach to design will focus on aligning user needs with business goals through intelligent, data-driven interfaces.

For Avinab Singh, understanding user behavior in the context of AI-driven experiences is of the utmost importance. He is committed to enhancing UX by using AI to automate workflows and create personalized, adaptive solutions for users.
