After long relying on a third-party fact-checking service on Meta's platforms, the company announced earlier this month that it is switching to an in-house experience, with Threads' Community Notes-style feature already in the works. The latest scoop from an insider revealed that Meta's new Community Notes-modeled feature already appeared on the code found on the iPhone version of Threads.
X has popularized this Community Notes fact-checking feature on social media where credible information from users will be added to posts to provide more context, clarity, and verification to the content.
Meta Threads' Community Notes Feature Already In The Works
Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer and researcher, found that the latest version of the Threads app already features the new Community Notes-esque feature which Meta is already working on. This followed up on the recent announcement by Meta earlier this year, with Mark Zuckerberg's video announcement detailing how the company would change from third-party to in-house fact-checking.
It was a fairly fast adoption for Threads after only announcing it last week, with the company being eager to deliver this new fact-checking procedure to keep their users guided and well-informed on a certain topic.
Initially, Meta's decision was unpopular for users, with many searching for how to delete the Facebook and Instagram apps via Google after Zuckerberg's announcement as it followed X's footsteps.
Threads iPhone App Features Community Notes
Paluzzi shared that users may now add a note to a certain post where they have input, and if it gets rated helpful, it may be published alongside the post which would keep the contributor's profile anonymous. Users who already found and used this feature on the iOS version of the app may also visit Meta's article regarding the feature, and there, they may join the Community Notes waitlist to become a contributor.
This latest move towards Community Notes focused on the continued changes in Meta's operations where Zuckerberg also announced that the platform will promote more free speech by lifting several restrictions on political and human rights topics.
X's Community Notes and its Copycats
Elon Musk made an unpopular switch from a third-party body that moderates content on X to a community-powered fact-checking feature called Community Notes, and this has been the way to verify information on the platform. Thesocial media have already refined this experience by making Community Notes appear faster on a post, especially if there is already an available writeup from a user.
It later became a popular feature on X as it provided not only a way to verify the content and avoid getting misinformed but also to provide context to readers who cannot follow the conversation. Because of this, other platforms have already tested this feature on their platforms, with Meta's Instagram being among the earliest to adopt this fact-checking feature on its platform.
On the other hand, Google also tested focusing on a Community Notes-like feature for YouTube, and like Meta, it also appeared last year to help YouTubers and their audience be guided and properly informed. X's massive influence includes Community Notes, and it has been greatly revered by rivaling platforms including Meta, with Threads' version of the feature already found on the iPhone app.
