AI weapons are still a big no for OpenAI, and the company already made it clear before that it does not want its technology to be used for creating or powering machines that can harm humans or other forms of life, yet an engineer did so. There was once a viral post circulating on social media that ChatGPT was used to power a sentry gun, up to a point where its Advanced Voice Mode was used to fire off the weapon and respond to user commands.
OpenAI has since shut down the use of ChatGPT for the said weapon, and the company reiterated its stance against this misuse of its technology, slamming the engineer and content creator for their actions.
OpenAI Shuts Down ChatGPT-Powered Sentry Gun
OpenAI is not standing by for its technology to be used as weapons, and the company shut down the recently viral video that showed how ChatGPT was used to power a sentry gun, using its iconic features and capabilities. The said video uploaded on various social media platforms, including TikTok, was already taken down by its uploader, but it already gained massive fame and attention worldwide.
This video was created by an engineer who goes by 'sts_3d,' and browsing their social media accounts, including YouTube, it is revealed that he is an innovator with many developments in robotics and the like.
However, OpenAI did not approve of his latest invention where he used ChatGPT to power a sentry gun and even went as far as to use the chatbot's Advanced Voice Mode to command the weapon to fire volleys of bullets, and then respond to the engineer.
OpenAI Still Says 'No' to AI Weapons
According to OpenAI (via Futurism), the engineer has violated its policies on the use of their technology with the creation of this sentry gun AI weapon, and they also gave him a notice to cease this kind of activity. With this, OpenAI reiterated its stand against AI weapons, particularly with the use of its artificial intelligence models, as well as their API, for these kinds of developments.
AI-Powered Weapons Are Dangerous
AI-powered weapons have been slammed before when the advancement was being applied to modern warfare tactics by different private companies and countries, but the dawn of generative AI made it a more serious call for all. The United States is known for pleading with China and Russia to ban the use of artificial intelligence for nuclear weapons forever and wants them to avoid this technology in their developments.
However, it is not only in the United States or among the top AI companies who want this technology to be avoided, particularly as the international community is also going against this misuse of AI. The United Nations has already regarded this use of AI for creating weapons of mass destruction as dangerous, and they are now calling for international regulations to help impede its development.
There is no doubt that artificial intelligence evolved significantly to already great heights and that it is beneficial in many industries to help make them more efficient and capable of providing their service. However, many governments and companies draw the line on its use for weaponry, with OpenAI among those who uphold this rule to avoid using artificial intelligence technology to harm humans and other forms of life in its use.
