For over three years now, generative AI has made its debut in the world, and before its arrival, it has been training on human-made data to share its knowledge with all, which Elon Musk claimed to be running out. However, the X owner also made a bold claim that the training data that AI relies on for its development is basically gone, and the renowned executive went as far as to claim that this happened last year.
The tech billionaire and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head revealed this information in his interview during the CES 2025 event, and the famed tech executive already has a solution for this problem.
Elon Musk Claims The World Ran Out of AI Training Data at CES 2025
Stagwell CEO Mark Penn recently interviewed Elon Musk at CES 2025 to talk about an assortment of topics, and this included artificial intelligence, to which the billionaire is considered a resource because of xAI. However, Musk made a massive claim during the interview when he said that the world already run out of human-made data for AI training since last year.
While this may be a bold claim from the executive who is fairly new to the AI space as xAI is only less than two years old, Digital Trends regarded that his recent statement reflects that of OpenAI's researcher, Ilya Sutskever. Last December, Sutskever predicted that the artificial intelligence industry has already reached "peak data" for AI training, and is one of the growing problems of the ramping up AI space.
Musk Suggested This Idea to Supplement AI Training Data
That being said, Musk has an idea that will supplement this human-made AI training data shortage, and it is by using synthetic data, according to the billionaire, it is where AI creates the training data for itself. According to Musk, this process would prompt AI models to undergo a process of 'self-learning,' and it is also used by larger names in the AI industry like Google, OpenAI, Meta, and more.
AI Training Data and Elon Musk's xAI Grok
Elon Musk created xAI for the sole purpose of developing artificial intelligence for multiple uses, including the creation of their AI-powered chatbot known as Grok, the sassy and all-powerful machine learning technology. However, Musk and xAI previously faced criticism when users discovered that Grok picked up ChatGPT-like output, with the public believing that it used OpenAI's code.
One of the biggest claims of xAI with its development of its language models is that it is open-sourced, with Grok's code also widely available to third parties, revolutionizing the process like other companies. Musk's rivals in the AI space like Meta with its Llama model, Stable Diffusion, Mistral AI, OpenAI's GPT-2, and more are also known for opting for open-source development.
While Elon Musk has been focused on going after OpenAI lately, preventing the company from changing its business model into a for-profit one, the executive is still active in his company's development of their AI experiences. There is no denying that Musk's experiences in the tech world made him knowledgeable about certain aspects, and his latest claim saying that AI is running out of human-made data for training is also backed by other experts' claims.
