Nintendo's interactive Amiibo figures have proved to be a huge success for the company, but for many consumers (at least in North America) it's a massive headache.
The figures, compatible with a number of Nintendo games, have flown off shelves. While characters like Donkey Kong, Mario and Princess Peach are readily available, the vast majority of Amiibo figures have sold out, causing prices to skyrocket on places like eBay as collectors attempt to complete their sets. Fans rejoiced when Nintendo announced one such Amiibo, Marth, would be getting a second release, but it remains to be seen if the company will do the same with other impossible-to-find figures, or if Nintendo's supply will ever meet demand.
If you thought trying to get a hold of a Pit Amiibo was struggle, I'm afraid we haven't seen anything yet. Check out the images below.
As posted on video game forum NEOGaf, these are rumored to be special edition Mario Amiibo figures for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Amiibo line, due out in March. Featuring a gold and silver plated Mario, the two product descriptions look legitimate, though it is hard to say for certain their authenticity. It's unclear what exactly the figures are for. Will they be "available" to the general public, only sold in even more limited supplies than usual? Possibly. Some fans speculate they might be gold and platinum tier Club Nintendo rewards. Nintendo did recently announce the Club Nintendo program would be shutting down, only for a new rewards program to take its place in the near future. Might these Amiibos have something to do with that?
It's impossible to say without a formal announcement from Nintendo, but one thing is for certain: the Amiibo Wars are just getting started. If you need a refresher course on what Amiibo are available and what they do in each compatible game, be sure to check out our in-depth guide.
