Sonduren Fanarredha's career is nothing if not an exemplification of how embracing change and adapting skills can lead to professional success across different industries. Moving from corporate finance to becoming a recognized leader in B2B SaaS marketing and a well-known automotive content creator, his journey reflects the growing trend of professionals pursuing non-linear career paths.
Building a Strong Foundation
Sonduren's career began in corporate accounting, where he specialized in finance, auditing, and taxation after earning a Bachelor of Accounting (Honours) from Brock University. His early work allowed him to understand the complexities of corporate finance and business operations.
"My early career was mastering the fundamentals—financial reporting, audit processes, and taxation. These critical skills gave me a strong foundation to understand the mechanics of how a business operates," Sonduren reflects. "But as time went on, I found myself drawn to the more dynamic, creative aspects of business."
Transitioning from Finance to Marketing
Inspired by his interest in storytelling and content creation, Sonduren decided to explore opportunities beyond accounting. This led to the launch of his YouTube channel, Cars with Sonduren, which became a platform for his passion for cars and creative expression. The experience confirmed his desire to transition into a more creative profession.
His first significant move into marketing came with a role at Microsoft Canada. This opportunity enabled him to bridge his technical finance expertise with his newfound interest in crafting engaging narratives.
"That role at Microsoft was a game-changer," Sonduren says. "It was the bridge between my technical finance background and my newfound passion for marketing and storytelling."
Driving Growth in SaaS Marketing
After three years at Microsoft, Sonduren spent a decade helping to scale high-growth SaaS companies, including Intelex Technologies, Kira Systems, and Airbase. At Airbase, he served as Senior Director of Product Marketing, leading initiatives such as product launches, competitive intelligence, analyst relations, and sales enablement. These efforts put Airbase on the map as the #1 spend management solution on G2 while also claiming top rankings from industry-leading analyst firms like IDC, Gartner, and Forrester. His work contributed to Airbase's acquisition by Paylocity for $325 million.
"My background gave me a strong foundation, but moving into the startup world demanded more than just strategy—it required getting my hands dirty and leading by example," Sonduren explains. "A lot of that mindset came from my work on YouTube, where I learned to build things from the ground up and drive engagement through real, hands-on work. I brought that same approach to the startup space."
Growing Cars with Sonduren
Throughout his marketing career, Sonduren continued to grow Cars with Sonduren. The channel, which features automotive reviews and industry insights, has amassed over 250,000 followers and 100 million views across YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. His engaging content earned him YouTube's Creator on the Rise award.
"Cars have always been a passion of mine," Sonduren shares. "Starting the channel was a way to combine that love with my skills in content creation and marketing—it became the perfect outlet. If there's one piece of advice I always share, it's this: pursue what you truly love. That's where you'll find both fulfillment and success."
A Changing Professional Landscape
Sonduren's career reflects broader changes in how professionals approach their work. The ability to apply skills across industries has become increasingly important. His experience combining a background in accounting with creative and strategic expertise in marketing highlights how transferable skills can create new opportunities.
"The job landscape is changing," Sonduren explains. "What used to be seen as a traditional career path is evolving. Today, professionals can take the skills they've developed in one field and apply them to something completely new. That's been my experience—moving from accounting into marketing, and at the same time building a successful personal brand in the automotive space."
In addition to his work as a marketing leader and content creator, Sonduren mentors others as an Expert in Residence with the Product Marketing Alliance (PMA). He teaches certification courses and provides guidance to aspiring marketers on topics such as B2B SaaS trends, product marketing, and business strategy.
Looking Ahead
Sonduren continues to focus on his dual careers, leading marketing strategies at Paylocity and expanding Cars with Sonduren.
"I'm excited to keep pushing the boundaries," he says. "Whether it's leading marketing strategies in SaaS or sharing insights in the automotive world, and making sure to have a lot of fun through every step!"
