Is chocolate good for your teeth? Yes, if it's Crest Be

Can you fight cavities with chocolate? Apparently, now you can.

In a bid to provide consumers with a new and unexpected teeth-brushing experience on top of standard oral hygiene, Crest has come up with a chocolate-flavored toothpaste.

Procter and Gamble, the makers of Crest and many other consumer products for personal care, household cleaning and prescription drugs, has announced that it is launching a new line of toothpaste called Crest Be. This new line so far has three different flavors: Lime Spearmint Zest, Vanilla Mint Spark and Mint Chocolate Trek.

The press release described Lime Spearmint Zest as having a "fresh, juicy and fragrant taste and finishes with a touch of lingering coolness," and Vanilla Mint Spark as a "favorite combination with two notes that blend incredibly well," namely, vanilla and peppermint. Mint Chocolate Trek "opens with a rich, creamy cocoa flavor that provides an indulgent and decadent experience... The cocoa flavor evolves into a minty cool sensation and ends with a lingering fresh feeling."

An initial review of the Crest Be toothpastes said the Mint Chocolate Trek "smells like mint chocolate chip ice cream and tastes sort of like a peppermint patty."

"We admit we enjoyed the flavor, even if we didn't have that clean-mouth feeling afterwards," the review also said. "Lime Spearmint Zest tasted like a cross between margarita mix and Lemonheads but left us with a cleaner feeling than the chocolate, and Vanilla Mint Spark wasn't all that different from regular toothpaste."

The Crest Be line of toothpastes seems to join the wave of bizarre-flavored toothpastes recently, most notably the cupcake, pickle, and bacon-flavored ones. Toothpaste has been a worldwide household staple for most of this century, and people tend to buy them without much thought. This has apparently made toothpaste manufacturers decide to create an entirely new line of toothpaste flavors offering customers more choices.

However, Crest is not quite new to this. In 2003, it introduced a different line of toothpastes called the Crest Whitening Expressions. This line came in flavors like Cinnamon Rush, Fresh Citrus Breeze and Extreme Herbal Mint.

The new Crest Be could also be Procter and Gamble's response to a 16 percent decrease in its income in 2013 when compared to the the declared income from the previous year. Sales have been reported to have increased by only 1.3 percent compared to the sales of the previous year.

The new toothpaste line will be available at drugstores and other retail outlets nationwide in the first week in February. It will retail for $4.99.
