Korea's 'Dejaview' Is an AI for CCTVs That Can Detect, Predict Crimes Using 'Change-Based Approach'

The latest study paves the way for law enforcement's AI use in preventing crime.

A new study by Korean researchers has successfully developed a new artificial intelligence system that can detect criminal activity and predict when crime is going to happen. This system is meant to be applied for closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) which could utilize its real-time video feed for the AI to analyze and determine possible incidents that will take place.

The massive possibilities of this technology will largely help law enforcement in their work, with a new tool that can help prevent and intervene.

Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) shared its latest study which helped develop a new AI system that it applied to CCTVs for detecting and predicting crimes in real-time (via EurekAlert). The researchers call this new technology "Dejaview," and it incorporates past CCTV footage, crime statistics, position determination technology and more for its system.

Dejaview was revealed to be capable of detecting "signals" that could foresee crime or criminal activities that are about to happen.

Dejaview Uses 'Change-Based Approach' For Analyzing CCTV Feeds

According to the researchers, Dejaview uses a "change-based approach" using two methods including time/space-oriented crime prediction technology and individual-centered recidivism prediction technology.

The AI will use past criminal data to determine a certain location's possible incidents to take place, also taking into account the time of when it could occur.

On the other hand, the second feature would focus more on "high-risk individuals" that can be detected by the system who are suspected to commit illegal acts. This would focus more on their actions and body movement, with the AI analyzing their different moves.

Through Dejaview's chance-based approach, law enforcement may use real-time CCTV footage to monitor the public better and prevent crimes from taking place. The researchers claimed that it could be used by the police and CCTV control centers in Korea.

AI-Powered Technology for Crime Prevention and Public Safety

AI-powered technologies for crime prevention have been skating on thin ice for several years now, despite pushing for public safety and security. This was because privacy and sensitive information have been the main topic of debate regarding these systems, with Clearview AI known for facing massive scrutiny from watchdogs and government agencies for its facial recognition technology.

Despite these earlier concerns, experts and some members of the public believe that artificial intelligence is now crucial to public safety systems in place, one that would help law enforcement officials uphold peace and order. It was revealed by law enforcement agencies worldwide that AI is now a massive help in conducting investigations and monitoring the public space.

In the present era, AI has been positioned as the most advanced technology available, and it is not only used for creative or entertainment purposes but also for improving different systems including safety and security. Korea's new Dejaview has the power to do so, improving more of CCTVs' purpose from merely offering real-time video feeds to identifying potential crimes or threats for the East Asian country.
