Hydrogen fuel cells are the latest focus of BMW in its quest to achieve zero emissions for its clean energy fleet, and it introduced its latest efforts which would see fruition come 2028. With this ambitious plan, BMW has collaborated with Toyota to develop this hydrogen-powered development for the future of transportation that both companies would soon share.

With this, BMW is putting another option of clean energy solutions in the market that would join its existing and future electric vehicles that use batteries for its zero emissions goal.

BMW announced its latest clean energy venture which unveils its renowned focus towards hydrogen fuel cells, an alternative zero emissions solution to power its cars. This massive development by the renowned German car brand has already begun and the company promises that by 2028, its first hydrogen-powered cars will make its debut.

This focus by BMW also adds Toyota to the mix, co-developing its next-generation fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) that would make hydrogen power known to the world.

While BMW has not yet named its hydrogen fleet for 2028, the company has already one vehicle successfully tested with its BMW iX5 Hydrogen fleet.

BMW, Toyota Partnership for Hydrogen Fuel Cells

BMW and Toyota Motor Corp. joined hands in developing new hydrogen fuel cells that will soon be widely available from both brands. Their collaboration focuses on introducing the next-gen fuel cell powertrain systems that would soon be available worldwide.

It was revealed by BMW that hydrogen fuel cells would not threaten BEVs in the market, but complement the other for future clean-energy offers.

Hydrogen Options for Clean Energy Cars

The world may have seen the shift towards electric vehicles powered by batteries, but it is yet to go big for other clean energy options that are also possible for the future of transportation. That being said, there are a handful of automakers that have already developed this focus, and that includes Toyota with its Corolla Cross Hydrogen concept that is in the works.

Almost two years ago, Honda also announced its developments on a new breed of clean energy solutions for cars, and it too has been developing hydrogen fuel cells that will power its 2024 CR-Vs.

That being said, the focus on the hydrogen infrastructure is at its early stages, and it is yet to be widely used on vehicles for the shift to clean energy.

Hydrogen fuel cells are known for being energy efficient and their only byproduct is water vapor and air, making them a significantly better option against fuel, but can perform similarly to ICEs, unlike EVs.

BMW is looking to make its mark in the clean energy world in this new partnership with Toyota, pioneering the wide use of hydrogen fuel cells for cars, with its developments making their debut come 2028.
