Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR From Meta Is Delayed Indefinitely, but Not Canceled

The widely-awaited GTA: San Andreas VR is three years into having no progress.

The much-awaited Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR game that is supposedly coming from Meta is now on an indefinite delay, the company revealed. It was originally revealed by Oculus, before the Meta Quest rebrand, three years ago, with the game remaining a mystery as to what it has to offer the virtual reality world.

Not many famous video games for regular consoles or PCs are translated into a VR game, but this announcement excited fans as it is with one of GTA's most iconic releases.

Back when Meta was still Facebook, and Meta Quest was still Oculus, the company announced a Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR remake that would bring the renowned action RPG to Quest headsets. However, one of Meta Quest VR's social media managers confirmed in a reply to a user's comment on YouTube that its development for the San Andreas VR game is "on hold indefinitely."

The reason behind this unspecified delay is for the company to make way for other titles to develop, setting Rockstar Games' iconic 2004 game aside for now.

Meta said that it looks forward to future developments with Rockstar Games, but ultimately, this means that users would have to wait for further details regarding its progression.

Meta and Oculus' Promise on GTA VR Game

Three years ago, the whole world went ballistic with this remake of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the virtual reality platform, with it to be available on Meta Quest headsets, turning the experience into a more immersive experience. It promised to bring a new perspective to users, putting them in the shoes of CJ, but previously claimed that it is a development "many years in the making."

GTA: San Andreas and its Legacy

Come October 26 of this year, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will turn twenty years old, and that is two whole decades of the game's existence, being one of the most iconic releases from Rockstar Games. The game is also one of the most popular in the franchise, and it was originally released on only console and Windows PC platforms but has since expanded to mobile devices, next-gen consoles, and the Nintendo Switch.

It was at the center of Rockstar's peak, following the series' transition to the third-person POV with Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, with San Andreas diving deeper into Los Santos, also introducing San Fierro and Los Venturas. The game also featured iconic characters which became pop culture icons like CJ or Carl Johnson, Big Smoke, Ryder, and more which have also been subject to memes.

Apart from Rockstar's remake which bundled it into a trilogy release last year, there was also a fan who delivered a massive development by remaking GTA: San Andreas using Unreal Engine 5.

GTA: San Andreas VR has been widely awaited by the world, but users would have to wait for an unknown period as it has been delayed indefinitely until Meta says otherwise.
