Gemini App Brings Google Assistant Routines on Android—How to Use It?

Set Google Assistant Routines on Gemini's Android app.

Since Google is already relaying most of Google Assistant's job to Gemini, the AI chatbot's Android app version is now given a new capability that will help users set Routines using voice commands. There are various Routines that users may set or trigger for Gemini to run, and it will help start several actions that would now be set on specific schedules.

It is known that Gemini is now the point AI (point person) for most of the voice commands, with Google Assistant present within the multimodal model.

The many announcements from the Made by Google event introduced a plethora of new features to enjoy with Gemini and expanding on its revelations during the event, it also offers help in accessing Google Assistant's famed Routines experiences. This is available for users to take advantage of in the Gemini app for Android, according to a new report by 9to5Google.

It is a nifty addition by the Big Tech company as back in February, setting Routines via Android's Gemini app was unavailable for users, sharing a prompt that says it "no longer works."

As Gemini is now being given the spotlight for Android devices to be its main AI assistant, this latest addition reintroduces Google Assistant's Routines for users to access via the multimodal AI.

How to Set New Routines via the Gemini AI App

Asking Gemini to trigger a routine is as easy as saying "start" and then telling the AI which routine to set. While Gemini would be who users will talk to, it will launch Google Assistant to set the said routine.

However, it was noted by Google that "not all starters or actions" are supported by Gemini. Additionally, typing the Routine to be set by Gemini would also not work.

Google Assistant and Gemini AI

Google Assistant has been the go-to experience available for Android apart from the other experiences available on the devices, one that is the default for the likes of Pixel. It was once hailed as the best AI voice assistant in previous reviews, with the comprehensive analysis from MKBHD claiming that Google Assistant reigned supreme against its rivals like Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa.

However, that changed when Google Assistant was replaced by the Gemini AI, the forefront of the Mountain View tech giant's AI developments which promised multimodal experiences.

That being said, the first iteration of Gemini saw various Google Assistant features removed, and this was when the internet company was transitioning the experience to its new AI model.

Through the past months of 2024, Google vowed to improve Gemini and the initial problems that were found with it, and it also claimed that it will deliver on Google Assistant features to the new model.

The latest addition to Gemini's Android app version is Google Assistant's Routines, allowing users to set various actions through voice commands, without the need to invoke the previous voice assistant.
