While artificial intelligence is rapidly being incorporated into more applications each year, many people still feel too intimidated by its complexity or insidious possibilities to learn more and benefit from its possible real-world uses. Gianni Samwer, a 17-year-old high school student in Munich, Germany, recognized this gap and made great strides toward minimizing it within a short time. German technology investors have praised his achievement as "one of the most impressive and influential projects that increases collaboration in a new space."

Samwer began by finding interesting articles about AI and sharing them on a WhatsApp group with friends, along with audio commentary on each article. His friends added their friends, and as an audience began to build, he decided to transition towards a podcast that welcomed increased interaction addressing specific topics in a more structured format. Many user comments mention delight with the highlights he shares through high-quality content. German Activist Collective even called Samwer's podcast one of the "best podcasts for microlearning and technological education."

His podcast, AI Unleashed, is available via many apps and is consistently growing with over 35,000 downloads and 40 episodes, and experts are resharing other interviews on their own social media! Some of his notable guests include experts from Nvidia, Applied AI, Meta, Microsoft, the German Parliament, Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. One of the top 100 Influential AI leaders praised Samwer's podcast and his engaging conversation, admiring how "young talent is engaged in important discussions regarding AI."

His Instagram account has over 10,0000 followers, and posts there, as well as on the AI Unleashed Linkedin page, are also shared by trusted leaders within the AI industry. Applied AI expert and podcast guest said that working with Gianni was "beyond expectations. I was not expecting such a level of professionalism and knowledge from a student his age. I am incredibly honored to have had the opportunity to work with him."

As his digital community continued to expand, Samwer considered all of the people in his physical surroundings who could benefit from the valuable information shared there. Before AI Unleashed, Samwer had already created Compassion Catalyst, his own nonprofit charity organization that partnered with refugee, homeless, and women's shelters. Four times each year, Samwer organizes a big clothing donation drive and distributes items to people in need. At Christmas time, donations are packaged as Christmas gifts and delivered to the shelters. He decided to create his first in-person event welcoming people from these real-life connections to begin applying AI solutions to their real-world problems. He reached out to the refugee center and had over 30 attendees at his first live podcast event.

Some of the participants have already begun incorporating what they learned from his event into their daily practices for life-changing outcomes. Leyla came to Germany as a refugee 30 years ago and had a career change that required writing many emails. She is still improving her German skills and has had to spend much time agonizing over possible grammar mistakes and texting her kids for help. At the AI Unleashed Live Event, Samwer taught her how the premium version of Chat GPT he provided participants with could help her understand & correct her mistakes. She is becoming more confident in her grammar, so she can send her emails much more quickly. After seven months, she received a promotion due to her improved performance after attending the event.

Basira came to Germany three years ago and expressed her struggles with legal paperwork and aid documents in German. She used to rely on family members to translate and provide insight from when they migrated to Germany. After AI Unleashed's first workshop, she was able to use technology to help with those problems. However, it still didn't work perfectly. That's when Gianni got inspired to build LegalAI, a website that is designed to help people with legal issues. Basira and Gianni have been meeting regularly to think about the most needed features, and the product is currently in the beta phase.

Basira's kids now use AI as a tutor to test and explain important concepts while studying for exams, which are all in German. Before, she felt helpless when her kids were confused, but now she feels empowered through the technology available to her. Finally, one workshop participant learned from Gianni how to prevent grammatical errors while writing for his PhD. TUM Lecturer on AI praised Gianni Samwer for his tactless end-to-end organization of AI events with the broader interested community in Munich. Although Samwer's AI Unleashed project only began a short time ago, it has had a meaningful impact on real people's lives.

Samwer plans to continue exploring this interactive aspect more while continuing all of his impressive progress at his next in-person event with over 300 participants and 20 guest speakers this coming October. One of the biggest concerns with our increasing dependence on technology is a decrease in human interaction. Gianni Samwer's accomplishments in building a digital community that expanded to include and address the needs of populations in his local community prove that we could all feel more optimistic about AI's humanitarian possibilities.
