What to Expect from Funcom's Dune: Awakening Showcase?

Funcom is leaving the reveal of its new gameplay footage to Gamescom, but its previous drop of Dune: Awakening's cinematic trailer. brought plenty of hype behind the upcoming title. First off, it would be an open-world MMO that would take advantage of the vast planet of Arrakis, with third-person combat being one of the main features of the game, centering on the advanced technology of this space epic from Frank Herbert.

The Dune Franchise and its Game Adaptations

Initially beginning in 1965, the Dune franchise from Frank Herbert has since grown to massive popularity, with a cult following to the renowned space epic centering on Arrakis and the House Atreides. From its early 90s film and game adaptations, it has since been remade by Denis Villeneuve with the 2021 blockbuster, Dune: Part 1, seeing massive success amidst the pandemic.

Despite its success in that year, speculations behind the remakes of renowned Dune games released around two decades ago were shut down, with fans following closely on the franchise's games.

The same year as the movie's release, Funcom went on to partner with Nukklear to co-develop a new Dune game, centering on a survival genre that would be similar to Conan Exiles.

Almost three years since its development, Funcom released the first official trailer for the upcoming game last June, but this time, it is introduced as an open-world MMO. Fans of the franchise are awaiting for this massive venture into Arrakis, with Dune: Awakening getting a chance to present more gameplay footage in Gamescom later this August.
