Is iPhone 16 Plus Nearing the End of Its Era? iPhone 17 Slim Could Be the Answer

iPhone 16 Plus could be the last one for its variant.

Recent reports suggest that Apple may be preparing to bid farewell to the iPhone Plus model. Renowned analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu have both indicated that the tech giant is considering dropping the larger standard iPhone in favor of a new, ultra-thin premium model tentatively named the iPhone 17 Slim.

This potential shift would mark the end of an era for the iPhone Plus, following in the footsteps of the iPhone Mini, which was discontinued after a brief run, according to CNET. While Apple has a history of refreshing its iPhone lineup, the elimination of the Plus model would represent a significant departure from its usual strategy.

Why Apple Might Ditch the iPhone Plus

Several factors could be contributing to Apple's decision to phase out the iPhone Plus. Firstly, sales figures for the Plus model appear to be relatively modest compared to its Pro counterparts.

Research from firms like Canalys and Omdia suggests that the iPhone Pro and Pro Max models consistently outperform the standard and Plus variants.

Moreover, the price gap between the iPhone Plus and the iPhone Pro has become less compelling for consumers. The incremental upgrade from the standard model to the Plus often doesn't justify the additional cost, especially considering the advanced features and camera systems offered by the Pro models.

"Everyone had high expectations. Consumers generally prefer a larger screen," Canalys' mobility research analyst Le Xuan Chiew said, referencing to the iPhone 14 Plus.

It's also important to note that iPhone Plus accounts for 10% of all total shipments of iPhones. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, it's not the top-selling model in the lineup, making it a redundant pick for some consumers.

The Allure of the iPhone 17 Slim

If rumors of the iPhone 17 Slim prove accurate, Apple could be aiming to reinvigorate its iPhone lineup with a bold design change. A significantly thinner device could differentiate itself from the existing models and potentially attract new customers. However, to succeed, Apple will need to ensure that the Slim model offers compelling features and performance to justify its premium positioning.

While the prospect of a new iPhone form factor is exciting, it remains to be seen whether the iPhone 17 Slim can replicate the success of previous iPhone innovations. Only time will tell if Apple's gamble on a thinner device will pay off.

With Apple reducing reliance on China's tech arm, the Cupertino tech giant is now shifting its focus towards India's manufacturing capabilities. For the first time, the company announced that the Pro models will be manufactured in the country.

With this revelation, more job opportunities will knock on the doors of Indian employees. This would serve as its jumpstart to attract more companies to invest in its electronic hubs.
