The update to Nothing's Phone (2a), a.k.a. its budget variant, is here in the form of the Phone (2a) Plus, and it boasts of the latest chipset from MediaTek, the Dimensity 7350 Pro 5G. Nothing's latest smartphone drop is the first recipient of this new MediaTek Dimensity SoC and is offering a more powerful performance for the device, compared to Nothing's last release.
Carl Pei's Nothing brand claims that this new smartphone offers improved capabilities, but what changes are available now on its latest drop?
Nothing Phone (2a) Plus is Here and Features New MediaTek Chip
Nothing has made a big splash right at the end of July with its unveiling of the Phone (2a) Plus, a new variant in its midrange smartphone lineup that promises better experiences for users with its latest upgrades. The company touts its latest chipset, the MediaTek Dimensity 7350 Pro 5G, with the (2a) Plus variant being the first to equip this chipset.
MediaTek's new Dimensity 7350 Pro 5G is the latest from the company, and it claims that it offers a 10 percent faster CPU and a 30 percent faster GPU that is exclusive to Nothing.
The Phone (2a) Plus features a 5,000 mAh battery with up to 22 hours of YouTube playback, Triple 50MP rear cameras, and promises up to 3.0GHz, all for $349.
What Changed? Nothing Phone (2a) Plus vs. Phone (2a)
It was noted by 9to5Google that apart from the new chip, front camera, and metal accents in its body, there are not many changes to the (2a) Plus from the Phone (2a). Its 6.7-inch AMOLED screen remains the same, as well as its battery size, and it also sports a similar IP54 dust and water resistance rating to the Nothing Phone (2a).
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus would be a worthy addition to those who do not own the (2a), but upgrading from the previous to the new one only brings slight changes to the experience.
Nothing's Smartphone Development
The tech landscape saw massive changes from the young startup company of Carl Pei which delivered a unique branding with the new tech firm called "Nothing." The company unveiled its first smartphone two years ago with the Nothing Phone (1), a device that was well received by the industry with its unique OS and UI, one that did not launch in the US.
Because of that, it became one of the most coveted smartphones in the US, and this also led to the region awaiting the next iteration of the device with Nothing's Phone (2) which followed in 2023.
However, Nothing broke its annual release cycle by introducing another smartphone variant which centers on a midrange device called the Nothing Phone (2a) earlier this year.
With this succession of releases, Nothing is making its devices more regular in the market, seeing short windows before the next devices arrive, with 2024 already seeing two variants of the Phone (2a). The latest, Nothing Phone (2a) Plusoffers the latest workhorse from MediaTek with the Dimensity 7350 Pro 5G which is a slightly more powerful device, but there are only a few upgrades available for users now.
