Google will reportedly replace the Chromecast from 2020 with a new set-top box device for its next release called the "Google TV Streamer." Earlier leaks and rumors claim that Google is already working on a device that would succeed the previous Chromecast with Google TV device, but this time, it will no longer be in dongle-style.

In this latest outing, Google TV Streamer would be another device to add to one's television console, featuring a uniquely designed tech for all things streaming.

A new report from 9to5Google follows up on its previous rumor claiming that Google is working on a new device to succeed the Chromecast, and now, this tech gets a name called the "Google TV Streamer." One of the most noticeable update is the name change, however, it will also move away from its dongle-design and be available as a set-top box.

This black box-inspired design is unique and unlike that of the Apple TV 4K, as it will be a pill-shaped device that is slightly tilted when placed on the table or console.

Its design only features a minimal tilt and it would not be that noticeable atop the TV console, offering two plugs that are reportedly for power and HDMI.

Chromecast's Replacement: What to Expect?

Chromecast's replacement is the Google TV Streamer which would deliver a minimalist look, alongside the classic design of the dongle's remote control, complete with the D-Pad, volume buttons, and other functions. It also comes with a mic button that would trigger the voice commands.

More importantly, it will also come with the Magic button that has the star logo on it, previously known to be first introduced on Walmart's Onn 4K Pro box.

Google's Chromecast and Streaming

It is more than a decade since Google first introduced the Chromecast device which started in 2013, offering a new kind of streaming and internet-based cable media experience for televisions. However, on its tenth anniversary, Google decided to pull the plug on its updates and ended the support for the old plug-in device, previously one of its most popular home tech.

The evolution of Chromecast over the past years saw the introduction of online streaming to the device, centering on the latest releases known as the Chromecast with Google TV. It saw different versions of the device made available to the public, including the HD and 4K variants which deliver improved resolutions and overall better experiences.

Since its last update in 2020, Google stuck with Chromecast's plug-in type device which offers a dongle that connects directly to a TV's HDMI port, and this will also upgrade non-Smart TVs with the improved capabilities. However, the new report suggested that Chromecast's era is coming to an end as Google TV Streamer would be the priority, said to be announced this August.
