Huawei is offering a discounted price for its flagship Pura 70 smartphone series, just three months after its launch. This move comes on the heels of the brand's impressive performance during China's major 618 midyear shopping festival.

Back in April when the Pura 70 first made a splash, Huawei did not anticipate that the newly-released lineup would be out of stock quickly, particularly the Pro and Ultra models.

On a rare occasion, Huawei is selling Pura 70 handsets at a nearly 10% discount following their strong performance during the 618 shopping spree in China.

All models in the Pura 70 series are receiving a price reduction of nearly 10%. This translates to a significant saving of 1,000 yuan (US$138) for the top-of-the-line Pura 70 Ultra.

Meanwhile, the more premium variants,  Pura 70 Pro and Pro+ see a price drop of 800 yuan each, while the base model Pura 70 benefits from a 500 yuan discount. The limited-time offer runs until the end of the month, according to Huawei's website.

Huawei's Biggest Flagship Launch Since Mate 60 Pro

According to The South China Morning Post, the Pura 70 series marked Huawei's most significant flagship release since the Mate 60 Pro in August 2023. That is the time when the Mate 60 Pro garnered worldwide attention for its advanced, home-grown Kirin processor.

Similarly, the 5G-enabled Pura 70 lineup is seen as a testament to Huawei's continued efforts in overcoming limitations within its semiconductor supply chain, despite ongoing US sanctions.

Strong Sales Performance Expected for Pura 70

The base model Pura 70 utilizes Huawei's in-house Kirin 9010 processor, as revealed in a teardown report by TechInsights. This processor, also powering the Mate 60 Pro, was manufactured by China's leading chip foundry, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC).

Notably, this achievement bypasses US restrictions aimed at limiting access to advanced chip-making technology for Huawei and other Chinese tech firms.

Analysts predict that the Pura 70 will surpass the sales figures of its predecessor, the Mate 60 Pro. Positioned as a major competitor to Apple's iPhone 15 and upcoming 16 series, TechInsights forecasts the Pura 70 to reach global shipments of approximately 10.4 million units in 2024, exceeding the Mate 60 Pro's 6.2 million units shipped in 2023.

Rewarding Success During 618 Shopping Festival

The price cuts strategically follow Huawei's impressive results during the recent 618 shopping festival. Counterpoint Research reported that the Shenzhen-based company enjoyed a significant 42.4% year-on-year increase in smartphone sales during the event. Additionally, Huawei held the top spot among all brands in China, boasting a remarkable 69.7% year-on-year growth in smartphone shipments within the first quarter of 2024 (the latest data available from Counterpoint).

Despite its strong domestic performance, Huawei did not secure a position within the top five global smartphone brands by sales in the second quarter of 2024.

Counterpoint's report, released earlier this week, reveals that Apple and Samsung Electronics maintain their dominance in the global market, followed by Chinese brands Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo.

However, the global smartphone market itself has seen a positive resurgence in the second quarter, with a 6% growth compared to the same period last year. This marks the strongest year-on-year growth in the past three years.
