ChatGPT vs. Humans in Comedy

Researchers from the University of Southern California compared jokes generated by ChatGPT 3.5 to those crafted by human writers. They aimed to investigate whether artificial intelligence could surpass humans in terms of humor, a task traditionally considered a hallmark of human creativity.

Led by Drew Gorenz, a doctoral candidate in social psychology at USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences, the study used a rigorous approach to gauge participants' responses to jokes generated by ChatGPT and human writers.

Gorenz noted that while ChatGPT lacks emotional understanding, it demonstrated a knack for producing novel and humorous content. Participants evaluated the humor of jokes from both sources.

The findings revealed a notable preference among nearly 70% of participants for jokes generated by ChatGPT over those crafted by humans. Conversely, a smaller percentage found human-generated jokes funnier, with only about 5% rating jokes from both sources equally.

The study encompassed two main experiments. In the first, participants were presented with humorous phrases generated by humans and ChatGPT across various tasks.

These tasks included crafting witty responses to prompts like common acronyms and scenarios such as humorous roasts. The results underscored ChatGPT's ability to consistently elicit higher humor ratings than human-generated content.

In a subsequent experiment, researchers challenged ChatGPT to develop satirical headlines similar to those from The Onion, a renowned satirical news source. Participants again rated ChatGPT's outputs on par with the original headlines, showcasing its ability to mimic the satirical style effectively.

AI in Creative Industries

Gorenz, who also has a background in stand-up comedy, acknowledged that his study raises pertinent questions about integrating large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT in creative industries, particularly entertainment.

He pointed out concerns voiced within these sectors regarding the potential displacement of human writers by AI-driven technologies. The implications of this research extend beyond entertainment, touching on broader societal shifts toward AI adoption in creative fields.

While enthusiasts may find ChatGPT's humor-enhancing capabilities appealing for everyday interactions, professionals in creative industries, particularly comedy writing, may perceive AI as a disruptive force.

Overall, the study contributes to ongoing discussions about the role of AI in shaping cultural production and challenges perceptions about human-exclusive domains such as humor and creativity.

"The implications are more positive for people who merely want to reap the benefits of elevating their everyday communications with a dose of humor," the researchers wrote.

"But for professional comedy writers, our results suggest that LLMs can pose a serious employment threat," Schwarz added in a statement. The study's findings were published in the journal PLoS ONE.
