The famed service known as Apple Pay may bring an upgrade soon as part of its adherence to the NFC standard, offering new features to experience on the renowned contactless payment service. Presently, Apple Pay only provides a single transaction for every tap, and it is to pay using a linked card on one's Wallet app and not much else as its standard focuses on that only.

However, a feature reportedly called "Multi-Purpose Tap" may change the NFC standard, and Apple Pay's next-gen upgrade would follow.

Apple Pay is Getting an NFC Upgrade Coming Soon

The NFC Forum's latest publication shares the upcoming upgrade to the NFC standard, the technology used by Apple Pay, which may also mean that this service will see changes once it is made available. It talks about the upcoming introduction of new features to the NFC standard that would bring multiple experiences coming from its single tap-to-pay tech from before.

This would deliver multiple transactions in a single tap. Instead of paying for a service only, a scan on the NFC portal may include features like getting an automated receipt available on the Apple Wallet and more. Other possible features include earning a merchant's loyalty points or applying available coupons and discounts in one tap.

Multi-Purpose Tap and the NFC Forum's Standard

According to the NFC Forum, this feature is called "Multi-Purpose Tap," and it is considered the next-gen upgrade for the technology's standard.

The forum said plenty of features and functions may arrive at the service in the future, all designed to provide users with a seamless NFC experience.

Apple Pay and the NFC Technology

It has been a long time since Cupertino introduced its contactless payment experience, Apple Pay, to its users, one that significantly saw a massive importance during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is known that Apple has faced antitrust issues with its Apple Pay service in recent times, and the court denied its request to dismiss the lawsuit.

For a long time, Apple asserted exclusivity on the Apple Pay service, meaning that third-party payment apps that wished to tap into the iPhone's NFC technology were denied. That changed after it faced the lawsuit as Apple loosened its restrictions for third-party platforms to use the iPhone NFC and have their service use the contactless payment features.

Apart from the NFC technology on Apple Pay, there is also the dedicated credit card, the Apple Card Savings, and Apple Pay Later, which allows users to purchase goods or services now and settle them in installments. The main technology behind Apple Pay is the NFC, and that standard is getting an upgrade soon with Multi-Purpose Tap, which will bring more capabilities and features to all soon.
