Cybersecurity for most of the population often equates to passwords guarding their devices and data. This has prompted others to ask what exactly the expertly recommended password length is to ensure the least vulnerability against hackers.

According to sources citing Keeper Security experts, a password should contain at least 16 characters. The number of possible password combinations increases with password length, making it harder to guess.

To guarantee uniqueness, passwords should also contain a mix of capital and lowercase characters. Passwords with random symbols and digits are also recommended. Since personal information can be easily guessed, it is not advised.

When creating a strong password, it is also reportedly not advisable to use consecutive characters or digits. Moreover, common dictionary words and phrases should be avoided. Additionally, according to Keeper Security, purchasing a password manager is advised as a precaution against cybercriminals.

Weak Passwords, a Growing Concern

Experts in cybersecurity at Kaspersky previously claimed that hackers made over 32 million attempts in 2023 to access user passwords and that the number is still rising. 

Remarkably, studies previously revealed that over 45% of passwords can be cracked in less than 60 seconds. In our technologically advanced culture, this is a frightening truth. Sources claim that the widespread use of straightforward, easily guessed passwords is a significant problem.  

Many people make the typical mistake of using easily cracked terms like "password" or consecutive number combinations like "123456."Additionally, according to Kaspersky's data, many passwords contain dictionary words, which drastically weaken them. Furthermore, utilizing real names makes it simpler for hackers to access accounts.

In terms of internet security, weak passwords are both a burden and a vulnerability. Since protecting data is the main objective, a complicated password is safer. Users can even write them down on paper to ensure that they can securely remember their passwords. This is a good approach to making using apps less stressful because consumers will not have to worry about security breaches. 

UK Against Weak Passwords

Passwords are one of the most commonly associated cybersecurity measures, prompting even the government to enact measures to ensure people create strong, less vulnerable passwords.

The United Kingdom recently enacted one of the world's first laws requiring businesses to employ measures to help people keep their passwords regularly updated and less vulnerable.

This means that manufacturers of various goods, such as TVs, phones, and smart doorbells, are now required by law to protect internet-connected devices from hackers and notify users when their default passwords need to be changed.

The law also mandates that brands provide contact information and remain open about when they plan to release security updates to encourage bug and concern reporting.

With more hackers targeting businesses and consumers than ever before, enhanced security measures are expected to boost people's confidence in buying and utilizing technology.
