Fallout 1 and 2 Remakes Are Not Happening Right Now; Bethesda Lead Todd Howard Reveals Why

Sorry, "Fallout" fans. Bethesda Softworks is not working on remaking the original "Fallout" and "Fallout 2."

Interplay Entertainment's original Fallout and Black Isle Studios' Fallout 2 are not getting remakes by the game development company currently owning them, Bethesda Softworks, a top executive revealed.

This is after the franchise's massive fame following Amazon Prime Video's release of the Fallout series, which revived the hype behind its games and more.

During its wake, Bethesda also brought next-gen upgrades to its recent titles, including Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, but it seems like this is as much of a revival fans would get apart from the next game slated for the future.

Fallout 1 and 2's Remake Are Not Coming From Bethesda

In a recent interview with YouTube content creator MrMattyPlays, Bethesda Game Studios' top executive, Todd Howard, revealed the plans behind the remake of Fallout 1 and 2.

Howard noted that he floated the idea of a remake to the studio on several occasions, and there have been talks regarding this project. However, he suggested Bethesda has already avoided these in various instances, claiming that the game-developing company is not open to dedicating its resources to these projects.

Howard believes that Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 should remain in their "purest forms" or in their original 1997 and 1998 releases, respectively.

He noted that they are focusing on making sure these classic games can be played and run well on current-gen PC hardware rather than updating or changing them to suit modern gaming sensibilities.

What to Expect From Future Fallout Releases?

The best hope gamers would have for a modern Fallout experience on current-gen or future platforms are the most recent released ones like Fallout 76 and Fallout 4, as well as Fallout Shelter.

Moreover, since the series' release, there have been growing talks about the nearing arrival of Fallout 5, a game that will succeed its franchise and have close ties to the show.

Fallout and its Iconic Franchise

Fallout is one of the biggest game franchises in the world, best known for its cult following throughout the years, since its early days over at Interplay Entertainment with its original creator, Tim Cain, down to its Bethesda acquisition.

Cain previously acknowledged the work done on the Fallout series on Prime Video, praising several key factors that did his original work justice.

Since the 2024 release of Prime Video's original series, Fallout has gained significant popularity in the pop culture industry and the gaming market, with its past games seeing recognition and demand.

Despite being old releases, these Fallout games still enjoy massive fame and an active player base, including retro games that are still accessible for modern platforms.

While playing retro and via old consoles are the only ways to experience these titles, the demand for remakes of the Fallout franchise is growing, especially for modern consoles available now.

However, the possibility of Fallout 1 and 2's remake is unclear, with Bethesda's boss not yet considering these remakes for the franchise, with the next game fit for modern consoles still unconfirmed.
