A recent survey conducted by Cognyte Software, a firm specializing in investigative analytics software, highlighted the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in law enforcement investigations.
Prominence of AI in Law Enforcement Agencies Worldwide
The survey, which involved various law enforcement agencies worldwide, including federal and state police, financial intelligence units, and border police, revealed that AI is becoming an indispensable tool for enhancing the efficiency of investigations.
The survey aimed to assess the current trends in data analytics usage within law enforcement and to understand the challenges and future plans of these agencies regarding the adoption of AI technologies. The results indicate a strong reliance on AI, with most respondents acknowledging its importance in modern investigations.
Specifically, 99% of those surveyed recognized the benefits of AI in data analysis for law enforcement, and 85% considered it either critical or very important for the future of their investigative work.
However, one of the primary technological challenges identified by law enforcement agencies is managing and analyzing unstructured data. According to the survey, many agencies still rely on multiple, disconnected solutions to process their data, which can hinder the speed and accuracy of investigations.
This fragmented approach underscores the need for modernizing and integrating data analytics solutions, a goal that many agencies are aiming to achieve in the coming years.

AI Capabilities Crucial for Law Enforcement
The survey highlighted several AI-powered capabilities deemed essential for law enforcement in 2024. These include pattern recognition, cited by 54% of respondents, image analysis by 53%, and risk assessment by 49%.
These capabilities are crucial for identifying and understanding complex criminal patterns, analyzing vast amounts of visual data, and assessing potential threats. Law enforcement agencies' investments in data analytics are expected to grow substantially, reflecting the increasing importance of AI in their operations.
This trend indicates a significant shift towards more sophisticated and integrated data analysis tools that can handle the complexities of modern law enforcement challenges.
The insights provided by the survey aim to help decision-makers within law enforcement, analysts, investigators, and other stakeholders responsible for implementing and managing data analytics tools.
Cognyte hoped this information could help guide future investments and strategies to ensure law enforcement agencies are well-equipped to handle evolving threats and challenges.
Global Surveyz Research, an independent global research firm, conducted the survey online in February, gathering responses from around 200 senior law enforcement stakeholders. These stakeholders included heads of investigation, chief investigators, deputy chiefs of police, assistant chiefs of police, commanders, and many more.
Additionally, the respondents represented organizations from the Americas, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region, providing a comprehensive view of the global trend in law enforcement data analytics.
