New York Mobile IDs Now Available, Present Your Digital State Cards via Android, iOS

New York is now offering digital state IDs for users to present.

The Big Apple is embracing a new technology integration as it recently launched the New York Mobile ID, and it offers its constituents a chance to use this for certain requirements where it is needed to present the physical card. Its new mobile app for storing digital state ID cards is now available on Android and iOS platforms and has various uses.

Other states have already presented this experience for their jurisdictions, with New York being the latest to embrace the digital switch.

In a recent press release, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the state's mobile IDs are now available on Android and iOS, offering users the chance to use them for different transactions and identification needs. Instead of using physical plastic cards, users may opt to use the mobile app to present their credentials and verify their identity where needed.

First, New Yorkers may register their driver's license, learner's permit, or non-driver IDs on the New York mobile ID (MiD) app, with the state promising control over their data.

It is available to present at as many as 30 TSA checkpoints all over the country and at all the counters in New York's JFK and LaGuardia airports.

How to Register and Use NY's Mobile ID

Users need only download the app on the Google Play Store for Android and the Apple App Store for iOS now.

Next, users must register their phone numbers, with the MiD only available for one device. They will be asked to take photos of the front and back of their driver's license and then provide a selfie verification.

After the verification process, users may use their New York Mobile ID and scan through checkpoints without a hassle.

Digital IDs and Its Availability

The pandemic era taught the world many things, including contactless transactions that could effectively spread infections to users whenever they handed off physical items. Apple was among those who brought massive integrations for digital IDs in various needs to its Wallet platform, focusing its rollout in the United States and Canada as early as 2021.

The likes of Apple, Google, and Samsung have worked with different regions in the country to deliver the experience, with Cupertino adding Arizona and Georgia for its driver's license digitalization.

Later, other states were added, and tech companies partnered with universities to add school IDs, with these integrations focusing on their use for specific institutions, airports, and other places. While tech companies take the first steps in these, they can only do much if a state does not approve them. However, in New York's case, the mobile ID is now available for various needs.
