Apple and its iPhone only have a few years to guarantee the device's security updates for users, especially with its recent promise when the iPhone 15 came out. Recently, this was compared to what Google and Samsung promised for their users, and it was regarded that Cupertino's smartphone has a shorter life and timeline than its competitors.
However, there is more than meets the eye for Apple, and with its track record on previous devices, the promised updates for the iPhones may unexpectedly be longer.
Apple iPhone Security Updates vs. Google, Samsung
Apple's iPhone security updates promise fewer years for users, and the recent regulatory filing for the iPhone 15 suggests fewer years compared to Google and Samsung. However, it was also pointed out that Apple only promised a "minimum" of five years for the iPhone 15's security updates, guaranteeing that these devices will receive attention until 2028.
The report from Mishaal Rahman noted that Google and Samsung guaranteed as much as seven years of security updates for their flagship devices.
Not only that, but its Android OS would follow the same timeline as the two Big Tech companies, with Apple seemingly missing out on two additional years.
Apple's Security Updates May Be Longer
However, that may not be entirely the case, and all hope is not lost for those who want to maximize their device's usage and continue owning the same iPhone for a long time. First, Apple's filing claimed it is for the minimum years but did not reiterate the exact timeline for security updates.
9to5Mac noted that the almost nine-year-old iPhone 6s recently received a security update from Apple on iOS 15 last March, which is not yet the end.
Apple, Samsung, and Google in the Market
Apple, Samsung, and Google are some of the top smartphone brands in the market now, and these Big Tech companies are known for competing for supremacy in the industry with their devices. According to recent numbers, earlier this April, Samsung took the top smartphone maker spot from Apple, with the South Korean tech giant holding on to its massive 20.8 percent market share on its smartphone shipments.
iPhone sales have declined since last year, especially during the era of the iPhone 14, which saw massive criticism from users about not having significant changes. However, this did not stop Apple from hitting an all-time high for its Services, as reflected by its revenue, which includes its App Store, Apple TV, Apple Music, and more.
With Google still dominating the Search and performing well with its Android OS, the competition remains steep for all global brands, especially the three competing Big Tech companies in the US.
Security updates are important for a device and promise longevity. While Apple's minimum years on paper may look inferior, older devices demonstrate that there is a lot more to expect from the company.
