Bill Gates Memoir: From Childhood to Microsoft Founder

Bill Gates is set to release a memoir next year, though it may not delve into all the behind-the-scenes details of Microsoft. The book, "Source Code: My Beginnings," traces Gates' journey from childhood to the founding of Microsoft in 1975. Scheduled for release on February 4, 2025, the memoir is now available for preorder.

Gates revealed through a blog post that his memoir discusses the tougher parts of his early life, including feeling like a misfit as a kid, clashing with his parents as a rebellious teenager, dealing with the sudden loss of someone close to him, and almost being expelled from college.

The book also details Gates' pivotal decision to co-found Microsoft with the late Paul Allen. However, the memoir seems to skip over the details of Microsoft and Gates' other business activities.

According to its description, Source Code is not about Microsoft, the Gates Foundation, or the future of technology. Instead, it focuses on the personal story of how Gates became who he is today: his childhood, his early passions, and his pursuits.

Exploring Bill Gates' Uncharted Past

Bill Gates noted that despite being in the public eye since his early 20s, much of his earlier life is not well known. He mentioned on his blog that questions about his upbringing, time at Harvard, and the co-founding of Microsoft led him to realize that people might be interested in the journey and the influences that shaped him.

The book will explore some of Gates' more challenging aspects of his early life and cover the challenges he faced when he decided to drop out of school to pursue a career in an industry that was just beginning to take shape.

He also mentioned that the book highlights the stories of numerous individuals who supported him, encouraged his growth, and helped transform his quirks into strengths. Penguin Press, Gates's UK publisher, has described the upcoming memoir as a warm, wise, and revealing self-portrait of one of the most influential people of our age.

Gates has previously authored four books: The Road Ahead (1995), co-written with Microsoft executive Nathan Myhrvold and journalist Peter Rinearson, discussing the implications of the personal computing revolution; Business @ the Speed of Thought (1999), co-authored with Collins Hemingway.

After relinquishing his role as Microsoft's chair in 2014, Gates has focused mainly on philanthropy. Alongside his ex-wife Melinda French Gates, he created the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, known for its significant contributions to global health and poverty reduction, with over $50 billion invested to date.

However, following their divorce in 2021, Melinda announced she would step down as co-chair of the foundation. Her last day of work at the foundation will be on June 7.

Gates is also involved in Breakthrough Energy, which promotes clean energy, and TerraPower, which advances nuclear technologies.
