Google has replaced the "Chromecast built-in" brand with its original name, "Google Cast." This change reverses the switch made in 2016 when "Google Cast" was replaced with "Chromecast built-in."
Google Removes 'Chromecast Built-In' Brand, Reintroduces 'Google Cast'
At the recent I/O 2024, Google quietly changed the "Chromecast built-in" brand to "Google Cast," returning it to its original name before the switch in 2016. Initially, Google Cast was replaced with Chromecast built-in at the end of 2016, which made sense because many people knew about the affordable Chromecast dongles.
LG unveiled at CES that its 2024 webOS-powered TVs would feature Chromecast built-in and Google Home support. Google expressed enthusiasm during the on-stage announcement, highlighting the convenience of LG TV users starting to seamlessly watch videos from their phone or Chrome browser on their television screen with a simple tap of the Cast icon.
During the I/O event, Google announced that Android Automotive OS would now support Google Cast. The company noted that Google Cast, previously known as Chromecast built-in, is being integrated into cars.
This branding update is evident on Android.com, with chromecast.com/built-in redirecting to that page. Additionally, a Google Support article titled Google Cast delivers multi-screen TV and audio experiences with speakers reflects this change. Including "Google" in the name of Google Cast might be the reason for this rebranding.
Although the Cast's fundamental features and capabilities remain unchanged, users may encounter a new badge displayed on the packaging of related products. This badge serves as a visual representation of Google's rebranding efforts, signifying the transition from "Chromecast built-in" to "Google Cast."

While Casting's core functionality remains consistent, this subtle change in branding aims to streamline the user experience and align the product ecosystem more closely with Google's overarching brand identity.
A key consideration now is how this rebranding will affect the naming of future Chromecast devices produced by Google. Previous reports suggested that Google was working on a new Google TV-powered Chromecast.
While it's unlikely that Google will entirely abandon the well-established Chromecast brand, there may be a shift in how it's utilized, especially considering the cumbersome addition of "with Google TV." The recent branding adjustment might be a strategic move to preserve the "Chromecast" name for Google's product line.
Android Automotive OS is set to receive many new features, including support for Google Cast and additional apps. These updates will initially be available on Rivian vehicles, although it's worth noting that Rivian's use of Android has not been publicly confirmed.
With the integration of Google Cast, users can connect their devices to their car's WiFi network and stream content from Android and iOS devices directly to the car's display.
