Samsung executives filed their resignation and cited it as personal in nature. The news came as the company prepares to unveil the Galaxy S6 smartphone, one of the year's most anticipated devices. The unveiling is set to begin next month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
On Monday, Kim Seok-pil, vice president of strategic marketing for Samsung's mobile communications department, has filed his resignation which, according to the company, is effective immediately. Kim cited health as the reason why he's resigning. It was noted that Kim's health has deteriorated which made him unable to perform his responsibilities.
Kim, who assumed his post back in December, will be succeeded by Lee Sang-chul who is the acting vice president in charge of the countries in Central Asia. This includes Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia.
The other resignation came from Park Gwang-gi, the company vice president of strategic marketing in the video display department. Park's resignation came as a surprise since the company's display business is performing well as compared to the smartphone department.
Park has been with Samsung for 30 years and has mentioned in an email that he has enjoyed those years with the company. There's no successor named yet although Samsung would process his resignation soon.
Apart from the company's preparation towards the unveiling of the Galaxy S6, it also needed to consider the first quarter as its crucial time of the year. Samsung, the leading smartphone vendor in the world, now faces a strong competition from Apple and other smartphone vendors such as China-based Xiaomi.
Samsung has had a number of executives who left the company during the last couple of months. The changes were made as part of the company's restructuring plan with the aim of getting back on track in terms of sales or profits.
In 2014, Samsung's profits suffered a big blow when it went down by around 30 percent as compared to its earnings in 2013. The number gave the company a huge reason to rethink its strategy and do some shifting around. One of the things it has achieved so far is introducing new build materials in the design of their device. There's also a report that the company has been working on de-bloating the TouchWiz.
The Galaxy S6 is touted as an authentic next-gen device which Samsung has been leaning on to bring the company back on the right track. In other words, no one, not even the resignation of the company executives, could stop Samsung from unveiling the next flagship device which is set to occur in less than a month.
