Apple Blocked $7B in App Store Fraud in 2023, Is It the Safest Platform?

Apple's App Store is touted to be the safest, but is it?

A new report from Apple claims that it blocked over $7 billion in fraudulent transactions in the App Store from 2020 to 2023, touting its efforts for its app marketplace.

This is despite the massive antitrust cases against Apple in the country and other regions, one of which compels the company to allow third-party platforms for app distribution in addition to the exclusive App Store.

It is known that the EU region, thanks to the DMA law, already allowed third-party platforms and sideloading, but is the App Store still the safest for Apple devices?

In a news update, Apple claimed that it blocked as much as $7 billion in fraudulent transactions in the App Store, including apps, services, fake payments, and more, from 2020 through 2023.

The company said that since 2008, it has invested in developing the App Store to bring the best for Apple users, calling it the "safest and most secure experience."

Over $7 billion was stopped by the company from happening on the App Store and victimizing users, but in 2023, it saw as much as $1.8 billion alone. During this time, as many as 14 million stolen credit cards and 3.3 million accounts were banned for transactions on the platform.

As many as 1.7 million app submissions were rejected after failing to meet Apple's App Store requirements and standards. Also, around 374 million developer and customer accounts, as well as 152 million ratings and reviews, were removed due to fraud.

Is the Apple App Store the Safest for Its Devices?

This new report shared Apple's efforts to keep the App Store upholding its standards and value as the only platform to download apps and transact on iPhones, iPads, and other devices.

The company claimed that it is the safest, justifying its decision to keep the exclusive app platform on its devices amidst massive protests for third-party platforms.

Apple App Store and the Antitrust

Last March, Apple faced a US Department of Justice lawsuit behind its alleged monopoly on the iPhone, pointing to various aspects, including the App Store, iMessage, and third-party wallets and smartwatches.

Furthermore, Apple's renowned adversaries regarding the App Store, Spotify, along with the likes of Deezer, Coalition for App Fairness, Epic Games, and more, showed support for the case against Cupertino.

The suit is known for claiming that Apple impedes the competition and the market by hindering app development, as well as other products and services.

With that, Apple still pushes for the App Store to be the center of everything as it presents itself to bring the safest experiences for users, including its block of around $7 billion in possible fraudulent transactions in the past and present.
