OpenAI Unveils Her-Inspired Voice Assistant for ChatGPT with Real-Time Translation, Expression Recognition

ChatGPT is set to receive a significant upgrade, reminiscent of Scarlett Johansson's character in the film Her.

Embarking on a transformative journey, ChatGPT is about to get a major upgrade, which will bring it closer to being like the AI assistant in the movie Her.

Drawing parallels to Scarlett Johansson's character in the renowned film, this means it will interact better, responding more quickly and expressively.

A Step Closer to the Vision of a Her-Inspired AI Assistant

ChatGPT is getting a major upgrade that will allow it to interact more naturally with users, similar to Scarlett Johansson's character in the movie Her.

This enhancement brings the AI closer to the concept of a highly responsive and expressive assistant, and OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, appears confident in its potential.

Inspired by the movie Her, the new feature enables ChatGPT to understand and respond to facial expressions and translate spoken language in real-time. Unlike the movie's plot twist, it aims to maintain a reliable presence.

During a live demonstration, OpenAI engineers, including CTO Mira Murati, showcased the assistant's new capabilities.

The Verge reported that they demonstrated how the assistant could be more expressive while crafting a bedtime story.

They seamlessly switched to a robotic voice and finally finished the story with a singing voice. The team also illustrated the assistant's ability to interpret visual inputs from the phone's camera and respond accordingly.

Additionally, the assistant showed it could be interrupted and continue to function smoothly, even acting as a translator in real time.

The new assistant's voice response notably resembled Johansson's character from the movie Her, in which a man builds a relationship with an advanced AI assistant.

Following the event, Sam Altman posted a cryptic word on X: "her." As reported by The San Francisco Standard, Altman has previously mentioned that Her is his favorite movie.

Altman noted a remarkable global enthusiasm and optimism for AI, balanced with concerns about its potential drawbacks. Initially perceiving it as a Silicon Valley trend, Altman was fascinated to see how people worldwide integrate this technology into their lives.

The film delves into themes of loneliness and human-AI interactions. However, it's doubtful that director Spike Jonze aimed for the real world to mirror the film's depiction of robotic solitude.

Clarifying Voice Design, Enhancements

Murati clarified that the assistant is not intentionally designed to mimic Johansson's voice. She emphasized that OpenAI has been using these voices for some time. An audience member noted that the voice's personality and tonality might be why it wasn't immediately recognized as ChatGPT's.

These enhancements significantly improve ChatGPT's existing voice mode, which previously offered more restricted interaction. Unlike the current version, the new features allow the assistant to be interrupted and respond to visual input from the user's camera.

These advanced capabilities will be introduced in a limited "alpha" release in the coming weeks. They will initially be available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers before a broader rollout.
