OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Meta, and other leading AI companies have committed to halting the generation and dissemination of content featuring child sexual abuse.

These prominent artificial intelligence entities have come together to pledge their efforts to prevent the exploitation of children and the creation of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) through their AI tools.

Spearheaded by child safety organization Thorn and non-profit All Tech Is Human, this initiative underscores a collective commitment to responsible technology.

The commitments made by AI companies mark a groundbreaking milestone for the industry, signaling a significant advancement in safeguarding children from sexual exploitation in the evolving landscape of generative AI.

The primary objective of this initiative is to proactively prevent the creation and dissemination of sexually explicit content involving minors, thereby eliminating its presence on social media platforms and search engines.

Thorn reports that over 104 million files of suspected child sexual abuse material were reported in the US in 2023 alone, highlighting the urgent need for collective action.

Without collaborative efforts, the proliferation of generative AI technology threatens to exacerbate this issue, further burdening law enforcement agencies already struggling to identify and protect vulnerable victims.

This comprehensive document provides detailed insights and offers practical recommendations for AI tool developers, search engines, social media platforms, hosting companies, and developers to proactively prevent the misuse of generative AI in perpetrating harm against children.

Addressing Challenges in AI Data Training

One notable recommendation advises companies to exercise caution in selecting datasets utilized for training AI models, opting to avoid those exclusively comprised of instances of CSAM as well as adult sexual content.

This precaution is essential due to generative AI's tendency to conflate these two categories. Thorn is also urging social media platforms and search engines to promptly remove links to websites and apps facilitating the dissemination of illicit images of children, thereby thwarting the creation of new instances of AI-generated child sexual abuse material online.

According to the paper, the proliferation of AI-generated CSAM poses a significant challenge in identifying genuine victims of child sexual abuse, exacerbating what is commonly referred to as the "haystack problem" for law enforcement agencies tasked with sifting through vast amounts of digital content.

Thorn's vice president of data science, Rebecca Portnoff, explained the project's goal to the Wall Street Journal, emphasizing the intention to address challenges associated with the technology rather than surrender to them.

She expressed the desire to redirect the technology's course to mitigate its harmful impacts effectively.

Portnoff mentioned that some companies have already taken steps to segregate content involving children from adult material datasets to prevent their models from merging the two.

Additionally, she noted that some companies use watermarks to differentiate AI-generated content but cautioned that this method is not foolproof, as watermarks and metadata can be easily removed.
