Meta Platforms has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence (AI) offering with the launch of the Llama 3-powered Meta AI Assistant.
Meta Platforms, already known for its flagship products Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, released early versions of Llama 3, its latest large language model, alongside an image generator capable of updating pictures in real-time.
Like AI rivals OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, Meta's new offering comes with its standalone website.
What's New with Meta AI?
Expanding its reach beyond the US, Meta AI is set to debut in over a dozen markets, including Australia, Canada, Singapore, Nigeria, and Pakistan. However, the company faces challenges in Europe, where stringent privacy regulations necessitate careful navigation.
Users can access Meta AI in feeds, chats, search, and more across Meta's app ecosystem "to get things done and access real-time information."
As for more specific use cases, Meta says users can "ask Meta AI to recommend a restaurant with sunset views and vegan options," "to find concerts," and even "explain how hereditary traits work."
Meta Platforms unveils Meta AI Assistant powered by Llama 3, expanding globally with real-time image generation and strategic partnerships to challenge AI rivals.
Addressing concerns about model quality, Meta emphasized its use of high-quality and synthetic data to train Llama 3, aiming to mitigate issues encountered with previous iterations.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, underscored the significance of Llama 3's capabilities, revealing that the largest version of the model boasts 400 billion parameters and scores 85 MMLU, a metric used to gauge AI model performance. The rollout includes smaller versions with 8 billion and 70 billion parameters, further enhancing Meta AI's capabilities.
"We're upgrading Meta AI with our new state-of-the-art Llama 3 AI model, which we're open sourcing. With this new model, we believe Meta AI is now the most intelligent AI assistant that you can freely use," Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post.
Most Intelligent AI
Zuckerberg expressed confidence in Meta AI's potential, positioning it as the "most intelligent AI assistant" available for free use. He encouraged user feedback on Meta AI's new features, emphasizing the company's commitment to innovation and user satisfaction.
Meta AI's features include real-time image generation, sharper image quality, and seamless integration across Meta's platforms. The introduction of unique creation features, such as animated photos and playback videos, enhances user experience and creativity.
In a move to bolster Meta AI's capabilities, the company announced strategic partnerships with Essilor Luxoticca and Google. The former will see Meta AI integrated into Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, enabling real-time object identification, while the latter will provide real-time search results to supplement Meta AI's responses.
The initiative comes amidst Meta's concerted push to challenge OpenAI's dominance in generative AI technology. In a bid to catch up, the company has undergone significant restructuring, including overhauling computing infrastructure and consolidating research and product teams.
