Medium's paid Partner program will soon be centered on human-written content after the online publishing platform announced its plans to ban AI-generated content behind paywalls.
The blogging platform turned publisher, which allows anybody to start their blog while charging subscription access for some exclusive content, is one of the many companies cracking down on AI.
The decision reportedly comes as Medium looks to emphasize its platform's dedication to human storytelling rather than AI-written content, as per Bleeping Computer.
The new policy will take effect on May 1, 2024. Paywalls will no longer restrict completely AI-generated stories, and users may potentially be removed from the monetization scheme as a consequence.

Medium emphasizes that it is a platform for human storytelling and does not wish to host entirely AI-generated content.
Medium made it clear that while it acknowledges that AI can aid writers who are writing in a second language or make some writings more comprehensible, it is no longer permitted to create material only through AI.
The guidelines state that Medium permits the responsible use of AI-assisted technologies, subject to stringent transparency standards. Any story that uses AI assistance needs to make this very obvious in the opening two paragraphs.
Medium's AI Crackdown
AI-generated photos are also subject to this restriction and must be appropriately sourced and tagged.
Although Medium users can still publish tales created by AI on their blogs, these posts are not circulated extensively throughout the network.
Medium has tightened its restrictions on disseminating AI-generated content by prohibiting it from the Paid Partner program.
In January 2023, Medium began enforcing stricter guidelines regarding AI content, mandating authors to explicitly identify any posts created by AI.
At the time, the firm stated that posts it discovered to be AI-generated but had not been reported would not be deleted; instead, they would not be shared through Medium's different recommendation tools.
AI Policies on Other Platforms
Medium's policy change follows YouTube's announcement of new AI policies last March. Content creators will be given a checklist upon submitting a video to the platform.
It asks them whether their work portrays a realistic-looking scene that did not occur, modifies footage of a real place or event, or has a real person say or do something they did not do.
YouTubers must disclose any instances in which their films incorporate AI or other realistically altered data. They might have to cope with the repercussions if they fail to include the notice regularly.
However, the company made it clear that they will not compel creators to disclose whether they used generative AI for productivity-for example, to generate screenplays, ideas for new material, or automatically generated captions-because they recognize that creators utilize it in a multitude of ways during the creative process.
