Explainable AI: This New Tool Aims to Make AI More Understandable

This new tool aims to shed light on the "black box" of AI.

A novel tool has emerged from the depths of AI research, seeking to demystify the inner workings of artificial intelligence systems.

Shedding Light on the "Black Box" of AI

Developed by experts at Umeå University, this tool aims to shed light on the "black box" of AI algorithms, offering insights into the decision-making processes of these increasingly ubiquitous technologies.

Professor Kary Främling, a Professor at the Department of Computer Science, Umeå University., spearheaded the development of this advanced model.

"Explainable AI is an area that many people are interested in but few people know about or fully understand. The existing explanatory models are also not sufficiently comprehensible to the public," said Professor Främling, Head of The eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) team at The Department of Computing Science.

The CIU Method

Främling's novel approach, known as the Contextual Importance and Utility (CIU) method, aims to make AI more explainable. By analyzing the impact of different inputs on AI outcomes, CIU offers a nuanced understanding of how and why AI systems arrive at specific decisions.

Drawing from his own experiences, Främling illustrates the real-world relevance of explainable AI. In a scenario involving the selection of a site for industrial waste storage, traditional AI methods failed to provide transparent justifications for their decisions.

This limitation spurred Främling to develop a method that could offer clear and interpretable explanations tailored to various stakeholders' needs.

The CIU method not only elucidates the factors influencing AI outcomes but also breaks down complex data into digestible components. By dissecting the input data and examining each variable's impact on the final results, CIU enables users to gain a more granular understanding of AI-driven decisions.

One of the key distinguishing features of CIU is its departure from conventional surrogate models. While traditional approaches attempt to mimic AI systems' behavior, CIU directly analyzes how outputs correlate with inputs, translating this information into accessible explanations.

Implications of Explainable AI

Främling emphasizes the practical implications of explainable AI, highlighting its potential to enhance decision-making across diverse domains. Whether it's deciphering healthcare diagnoses, loan application assessments, or regulatory decisions, CIU aims to offer a pathway to transparency and accountability.

"This provides information that can be translated into understandable explanations and concepts that we humans use to justify our decisions and actions, says Främling.

"It is entirely possible to get more accurate information, and not just a 'hunch' about what happened or went wrong in an AI system. CIU can provide great opportunities for companies and their customers, but also for authorities and citizens."

The CIU method is coded in both Python and R programming languages, with its source code accessible to the public on Github. It can be easily installed as a library and potentially integrated into any AI system.

Additionally, CIU has the capability to explain outcomes generated by traditional AI systems that do not rely on machine learning. Ongoing research is also exploring its applicability to time series and language models.
