Italy's antitrust regulator has recently taken a firm stance against TikTok, issuing a hefty fine of 10 million euros ($10.94 million) for the platform's failure to adequately moderate content.
The move highlights growing concerns among governments over the safety of social media platforms and their impact on users, particularly minors and vulnerable individuals.
Italy Fines TikTok Over Failed Content Moderation
The Italian Competition Authority (ICA) announced on Thursday that it has fined three TikTok units, including Irish TikTok Technology Limited, British TikTok Information Technologies UK Limited, and Italian TikTok Italy Srl. The decision comes after an investigation revealed serious shortcomings in TikTok's content moderation practices.
According to the ICA, TikTok has not implemented appropriate mechanisms to monitor content published on its platform, especially content that may pose risks to the safety of minors and vulnerable users.
Specific challenges, such as the "French scar" challenge, were identified as potentially threatening the psycho-physical safety of users. Despite adopting guidelines and reassuring consumers of a 'safe' platform, TikTok has failed to fully comply with these standards.
"TikTok has not taken adequate measures to prevent the dissemination of such content, not fully complying with the Guidelines it has adopted and which it has made known to consumers by reassuring them that the platform is a 'safe' space," the Italian authority said.
One of the key issues highlighted by the ICA is TikTok's recommendation system, which relies on algorithmic user profiling to select and promote videos to users.
This system, while aimed at increasing user interactions and platform usage, has been criticized for promoting potentially harmful content and exerting undue influence on users' behavior.
More Governments Push to Rebuke TikTok
The fine imposed by the ICA underscores the growing pressure on social media companies to prioritize user safety and take proactive measures to address harmful content. TikTok, which has become increasingly popular among young users, must now reassess its content moderation policies and invest in robust measures to ensure a safer online environment.
The action taken by the Italian regulator is part of a broader trend of governments and regulatory bodies cracking down on social media platforms over concerns related to content moderation, privacy, and national security. In the United States, lawmakers recently approved legislation requiring TikTok to sever ties with its Chinese parent company or face a nationwide ban.
Similarly, countries like India, Australia, and Taiwan have implemented bans or restrictions on TikTok due to security concerns and the dissemination of inappropriate content. In Europe, the European Union institutions and several member states have banned TikTok from government devices, citing cybersecurity threats.
