Google Gemini AI Cannot Answer About US, Global Elections But Why?

Mum's the word for Gemini in political question.

Asking Gemini, Google's latest and most powerful AI, questions about the 2024 US elections or any other queries related to the world's political voting process would bring you nothing. In general, Gemini AI cannot answer anything related to elections whatsoever, and the renowned chatbot may also be apolitical, something which Google intended to do during this time.

It is widely known that there may be fake news or hallucinations created by AI chatbots regarding political questions, a critical time in the present landscape of the country.

Google: Gemini Cannot Answer US, Global Questions

Google revealed to Reuters that its latest multimodal model, Gemini, cannot answer US or global election-related queries from its users, and any questions regarding this would lead to the chatbot giving a statement that avoids it. When asking Gemini about the US election, even in a general sense, the chatbot would answer: "I'm still learning how to answer this question. In the meantime, try Google Search."

As part of its preparations for the upcoming 2024 US Presidential elections and all the voting processes worldwide, Google is temporarily making this feature unavailable.

It was previously revealed by Google that this would be what its AI chatbot would observe, but it was initially meant for Bard and not its latest, Gemini.

Is Google Making Gemini AI Apolitical?

While this may seem that Google is making Gemini AI apolitical during this time, the company clarified in its statement that not all election queries are facing this restriction. There are some questions that Gemini will answer for users, but Google did not make it clear what the accepted questions that could have the AI chatbot respond to the questions and not divert them to Google Search.

AI and the 2024 US Elections

One of the massive fears during this election period is the spread of fake, malicious, and hurtful information on the web that could disrupt the sacredness of the process and malign the public view. Researchers are already raising massive red flags regarding this, urging the government and Big Tech firms to help throughout this period and give people access to correct, factual, and helpful information from the web.

Companies like Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, and more have taken it upon themselves to place restrictions on their technology to avoid such events and the proliferation of disinformation using their AI developments. Through these restrictions, the companies have taken the high road in preserving access to truthful information online, preventing their chatbots from answering anything regarding the elections.

While Google initially pledged for their AI to give limited information via Bard, there were no initial announcements regarding this change on its latest multimodal model, Gemini. However, that changes now, as the Gemini AI is also part of this content moderation for all things politics, one that would nip the chatbot's ability to talk about US or global elections, as a whole.
