Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Seeks XR Partnership with LG in South Korea Talks

Reports suggest Meta and LG are working on a Vision Pro rival.

During a recent visit to South Korea, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg met with executives from LG Electronics. According to a press release, the primary focus of these discussions was on strengthening partnerships in extended reality (XR) devices and exploring potential collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI).

Zuckerberg's arrival in South Korea on Tuesday was widely anticipated, with high hopes for AI discussions and meetings with key figures in the country's technology sector. He met with LG Electronics CEO William Cho and parent company LG Corp. COO Kwon Bong-seok during his visit to discuss strategic plans for next-generation XR devices.

Previous reports hinted that the two firms were developing a competitor to Vision Pro. This rumor aligns with LG's announcement last month that it was developing a new headset.

Meta and LG Partnership

LG Electronics expressed a strong interest in Meta's advanced technology, particularly its large language models and AI capabilities, emphasizing the possibility of collaborating to integrate these technologies into future XR devices. Cho, in particular, emphasized LG Electronics' aspirations in the XR space, which align with Meta's efforts to push the boundaries of immersive technology.

Meta has been actively advancing its XR efforts, as evidenced by the launch of its latest mixed-reality headset, Quest 3. This was a strategic move, especially given the increasing competition from tech giants such as Apple, which recently launched the Vision Pro. Meta has also been increasing its AI efforts, including plans for custom chips and incorporating AI functions into its products.

Zuckerberg's Trip to Asia

Zuckerberg's visit to South Korea is his first known visit in nearly a decade. The tour, which also includes stops in Japan and India, demonstrates Meta's commitment to strengthening partnerships and exploring opportunities in the Asian market.

During this visit, meetings with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee are expected to highlight Meta's strategic objectives. Discussions are expected to cover a wide range of topics, including AI chip supply and expanding generative AI ecosystems, as Meta works to integrate generative AI technology into its core social media products and hardware devices.

Meta's plans to deploy a new version of its custom chip in data centers and secure graphics processing units from Nvidia demonstrate the company's goal of developing its AI capabilities. These advancements are expected to play a critical role in Meta's future XR and AI initiatives.

LG's shift to high-growth areas, as outlined in its Future Vision 2030, demonstrates the company's dedication to pioneering innovations in the XR market. The creation of a dedicated XR business unit within the Home Entertainment Company demonstrates LG's commitment to seizing opportunities in the virtual space arena.
