Google Launches AI-Powered 'Help me write' Chrome Extension: Here's How It Works

Easier and more efficient writing.

In the wake of Google's recent strides in the artificial intelligence (AI) domain, particularly with the introduction of its AI model Gemini, the tech giant has unveiled a new online writing tool.

Google has introduced a new Chrome extension named "Help me write," designed to aid users in generating writing suggestions as they compose or refine text in open fields on the web, particularly for short-form content like reviews or surveys.

Described as an experimental and creative writing aid utilizing generative AI, Google Help me write aims to facilitate easier and more effective writing across the web.

How to Use Help me Write

According to Google's support, to utilize Help me Write, users must meet specific criteria, including being located in the US, being at least 18 years old, having English set as the language of their Chrome browser, and being signed in to their Google Account. Additionally, users need to enable the "Make searches and browsing better" and "Experimental AI" settings.

Currently available only in English on Windows, Mac, and Linux, users can activate the Experimental AI features by navigating to Chrome settings, selecting Experimental AI, and enabling "Try out experimental AI features" and "Help me write."

Accessing writing suggestions is straightforward; users can right-click on an open text field on a website, highlight the text they want to rewrite and select "Help me write." From there, users can input a prompt, such as a phrase or question, to initiate the writing assistance. The Chrome extension allows generating responses, editing input, changing the length and tone, and undoing changes.

Google Says Sorry

Notably, Google encourages users to review suggestions before acceptance due to potential inaccuracies or offensive content during its experimental phase. TechCrunch also reported that users who have a subscription to Gemini Advanced will not have access to an improved writing model through this tool.

Moreover, data collected during the use of Help me write, including text, content, and URL information, is sent to Google for feature improvement, generative model research, and machine learning technology enhancement.

In a related development reported by TechTimes, Google has issued an apology for inaccuracies in historical image depictions generated by its Gemini AI tool, acknowledging discrepancies and expressing regret over certain portrayals. Google emphasized its commitment to rectifying the situation and improving the depiction of historical images through its AI technology.

Additionally, reports suggest that Google and Reddit have struck a deal for Reddit to provide content for the training of Google's AI models, with Alphabet, Google's parent, reportedly compensating Reddit $60 million annually for the collaboration. Reddit aims to diversify its income streams as it prepares for an upcoming IPO, planning to offer 10% of its shares in the process with a valuation of $10 billion.
