Sony Will NOT Release First-Party ‘Major Franchise Titles’, Sequels This 2024

PlayStation has nothing for existing titles and their sequels.

Sony is known for offering various PlayStation exclusives or first-party titles, but those are not coming this year, confirms the company, including the sequels of these games. There have been several great releases for the early 2024 progression of the company, but in this latest announcement, Sony does not want people to get their hopes up for later this year.

That being said, this does not mean that the company is not developing these games to arrive by next year, and there are also new titles to join this year for the PlayStation.

According to the latest financial briefing of Sony, the company unveiled their plans for the upcoming fiscal year which will start on April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025, claiming that it has "no plan for release of major franchise titles" for the said period.

There were no specifics given by Sony regarding this topic, but it can only be perceived that this means the renowned first-party titles and their respective sequels.

It also means that the PlayStation's game development and first-party studios do not have any games slated for release this year. Sony may mean games like Marvel's Spider-Man, God of War, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, and more will not release anything this 2024.

However, this does not close the book for new first-party titles and second-party games slated for this year.

What to Expect from Sony's PlayStation Games This Year?

According to ComicBook Gaming, this announcement does not mean a limited experience on the PlayStation as there is a lot more to look forward to for the year. This includes the upcoming Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, Rise of the Ronin, Konami's Silent Hill 2 Remake, and Stellar Blade.

It is also important to note that Helldivers 2 which was only released last week, saw a massive following on the PlayStation platform.

Sony and PlayStation's Gaming

The recent PlayStation State of Play commenced and brought significant updates to the gaming world for its consoles, with massive announcements from various expected titles revealed here. Sony unveiled updates to the likes of Death Stranding 2: ON THE BEACH, as well as the awaited Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, down to Konami's upcoming remake of Silent Hill 2.

Moreover, there is also an upcoming development from PlayStation and Hideo Kojima, one that is expected to be another PS exclusive title, teasing what it has to offer. The State of Play showcased more of what Kojima wants to bring to the gaming world, centering on an action-espionage game that will offer a fresh experience, and it is not Metal Gear.

There are massive expectations from Sony and the PlayStation at the start of the year, and considering that it is still early in 2024, more will be revealed later this year. However, that is not the case for the Japanese multinational company as it confirmed now that major franchise titles and sequels are not coming this year, but there are a lot more to expect for the PlayStation coming in 2024.
