Ford to Roll Out Free Tesla Charging EV Adapters Soon

Ford owners can soon charge with Tesla's supercharging stations.

Eligible Ford owners will soon be able to get their hands on free charging adapters to charge their electric vehicles at Tesla's supercharging stations, as reportedly confirmed by Ford's CEO, Jim Farley himself.

As per an X post, the CEO unveiled that fast-charging adapters will soon be distributed to qualified Mustang Mach E and F150 Lightning owners in the United States and Canada.

The massive automaker's action is purportedly intended to expand the BlueOval Charge Network, by including Tesla's supercharging network, and make charging more convenient for owners of Ford electric vehicles.

Presently, there are roughly 106,000 public charging stations in Ford's North American network, but by adding Tesla's charging stations, it will reportedly double the number of fast charging stations accessible to Ford's Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning pickup owners.

As for the release of the adapters, Wired stated it is projected this spring. Eligible owners will be for drivers with the 2021-2024 model year Mustangs and Lightnings in the US and Canada which will be able to reserve their adapters soon.

Unfortunately, the carmaker stated that it has no updates regarding adapters for consumers outside of the United States and Canada.

Ford and Tesla's Agreement

Ford is stated to be the first to collaborate with Tesla and to officially announce that it will be using the EV giant's charging connector, now referred to as the North American Charging Standard (NACS) in its upcoming electric cars.

As a result, according to current reports, NACS is now the new standard charge connector in North America, having been accepted by almost all automakers in the region.

The main agreement was for Ford to start using the NACS connector in its future vehicles in 2025. In the interim, however, automakers, including Ford, agreed to provide CCS to NACS converters to current EV owners in North America so they could use the Supercharger network.

Tesla's Growing Charging Network

Tesla has one of the most advanced and dependable networks of charging stations in the world, Forbes states that over 40,000 EV chargers are in operation worldwide, with 17,000 of these being reserved for use by Tesla owners in the US.

Tesla on the other hand, announced last year that it planned to open up at least 7,500 of its network's chargers to rival companies in order to contribute to the Biden Administration's target of 500,000 charging stations accessible to EV users by 2030.

Customers of Tesla pay between 25 and 50 cents per kilowatt to use its Supercharger stations, depending on where they live. It was unclear from Farley and Musk's comments back in 2023 if Ford owners would pay extra to utilize the Tesla charging stations.

Looking forward, Tesla officials reportedly issued a warning, stating that the company's rapid growth will slow in 2024 as it prepared to introduce a more affordable "next generation" vehicle in 2025.
