Colossal food giant Mars, is set to revolutionize the European freight industry with its plan to deploy 300 "heavy-duty" electric trucks by 2030. This ambitious collaboration with Einride, a Swedish-owned company, marks the largest electrification endeavor in European freight trucking history, signaling a big shift towards sustainable logistics.
Transformative Collaboration with Einride
Teaming up with Einride, Mars embarks on a journey to electrify its freight operations, symbolizing a transformative collaboration to set new standards for the freight industry.
According to Electrek, Einride's expertise in electric vehicles (EVs) and sustainable transportation aligns seamlessly with Mars' objective to reduce its carbon footprint and embrace cleaner technologies.

Strategic Launch in Germany
The strategic alliance kicked off its electrification journey in Germany last week, with two Mercedes-Benz eActros 300s making a significant route from Mars' Pet Nutrition factory in Verden to its logistics center in Minden.
This initial route is a pilot, with plans to expand operations to the UK and the Netherlands later this year. The move is expected to set a precedent for other freight industry players to follow, emphasizing the vast potential of electrification on a grand scale.
Infrastructure and Technological Integration
To support the electric fleet, Einride has installed two charging stations equipped with four charging points, all managed by its cutting-edge Saga operating system. This ensures that the electric trucks can seamlessly complete round trips, with charging options available at both ends of the route.
Environmental Impact and Emission Reduction
Mars is on a mission to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by introducing 300 electric trucks into its fleet. The projected annual reduction of 20,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions demonstrates Mars' dedication to minimizing its environmental footprint.
More importantly, this initiative translates to a remarkable 10% cut in greenhouse gas emissions from Mars Logistik in Europe each year, contributing to broader sustainability goals.
Financial Commitment for a Sustainable Tomorrow
In tandem with its ambitious electrification plans, Mars is investing $1 billion over the next three years to achieve its zero-emissions target by 2050. The company aims to cut carbon emissions by half across its entire value chain by 2030, showcasing a formidable financial commitment to sustainable practices.
Mars is not merely stopping at electric trucks; the company envisions a future that includes an autonomous pilot project scheduled for implementation in 2025. This approach positions the food manufacturer at the forefront of technological innovation in the freight industry.
"This partnership is our latest investment to achieve net zero by 2050, implementing the actions outlined in the Mars Net Zero Roadmap with a focus on improving and optimizing logistics, redesigning networks, transforming the type of transport we rely on, and embracing the electrification of our truck fleets. Together with our partners, we're driving change and showcasing a commitment to sustainability at scale," Barry Parkin, chief procurement and sustainability officer at Mars, said via Business Green.
In other news, a new EV rumor claimed that the Apple Car was not coming this year. Instead, the electric car with an Apple logo might come as late as 2028.
