Steam's Standards
The best-selling titles of the year were separated into four sales levels on the digital storefront: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Platinum represents the top 12 best-selling games of the year, while Gold includes titles 13-24, Silver 25-50, and Bronze includes everything else. However, Steam maintains that titles are placed in random order inside the categories since "revenue specifics are not disclosed."
Gamerant reports that with data from January 1, 2023 to December 15, 2023, Steam determined the top 100 selling titles on the site. This metric however, proved to give latecomer games like 'The Finals' at a disadvantage.
For the most played titles on Steam this year, Valve reportedly determined the games based on how well each performed in terms of concurrent users. With this in mind, 11 different Steam games were able to attract more than 300,000 players at the same time in 2023. Many of these games overlapped with those on the Top Sellers list, including Destiny 2, Baldur's Gate 3, Hogwarts Legacy, and DOTA 2.
A Constantly Changing List
Comicbook states that this list in particular proves to have seen a lot of changes in its rankings partly because of the large number of outstanding titles that have been released on an almost monthly basis.
Fans may reportedly not only check which of their favorite games made the top 100 best-selling Steam games of the year, but gamers can also add some new titles to their backlog by purchasing the games while it is still inexpensive with Steam's ongoing winter sale.
